Rating: Summary: good resource Review: All English teachers, students and writers should have a copy of this book as a resource. It is practical and insightful. Steven King recommends it in his On Writing book as a valuable tool.
Rating: Summary: contains basics in a clear and concise format Review: This book is indispensible for writers of all levels. I found it to be extremely helpful in addressing basic (and more sophisticated) grammatical errors. A lot of written English has deteroriated into 'spoken English on paper', but there are major differences in what one writes and how one would say the same thing. For college students, this book is a must-have. I went through 2 of them (beat them up rather badly) during my college years and managed to score high grades in all of my writing classes (and I was an engineering student at a top liberal arts school). If you consider communicating effectively through both the spoken and written word to be important, then I highly suggest buying and studying this book. p.s. There IS a reason why this book has been a top-seller for so many years.
Rating: Summary: Art of clear and concise writing. Review: No book as small as this and with fewer words will help any writer more. This powerful little book will help any writer become a better writer. This book contains the rules of grammar phrased as direct orders and provides the principal requirements of plain English style. The book concentrates on writing fundamentals and the rules of usage and principles of composition. A masterpiece in the art of clear and concise writing that should go off to college with every freshman. If you think the spell checker / sentence structure helper on your office program will help more than this little book you are sadly mistaken. ...
Rating: Summary: For English Writers Far and Wide... Review: If you are a writer of any sort in the English Language and as all writers short of cash, this is THE BOOK to have. It has all the grammar rules in a short, sweet and funny format. Easy reading for those not exactly interested in the nuances of grammatical purity. ... END
Rating: Summary: The Little Book That Packs Quite a Wallop Review: This book's small size is representative of its content: "Short and sweet." (My kind of reference book) Strunk is a no-frills kind of guy, and this is demonstrated in this concise, but powerful treatment of writing style. I advise any writer, technical or not, to obtain a copy of this one. Because of it's valuable content and low price, it's one of the best bargains around.
Rating: Summary: Must Have Review: I don't know why, but this is THE must have book for writing. Any kind of writing. I should be refering to it in order to write this recomendation. Read it. Learn it. Love it. Forget it and then run to it when you've forgotten whether you need to use a semi-colon. Fight over it. Step on it. Use it to prop up your dinner table. But if you don't have it don't bother writing.
Rating: Summary: For the student Review: Strunk & White was a gift to me from my philosophy professor. I read it immediately and the knowledge I had gained from the book is impressive-I only wish that I would have read it at the beginning of my college career, and not towards the latter end. "The Elements of Style" has changed my writting and speaking mannerisms completely and I feel that my writting has become more fluent and professional. I am a pre-med major, and Strunk & White address issues that aid in scientific writting. I would strongly suggest for any student-highschool, college, or graduate-to read this and "keep it close at hand", just as my professor had said to me. And remember, rule 18: Omit Unnecessary Words.
Rating: Summary: An essential Review: Detailed enough to be enormously handy, but short enough not to be obnoxious, this book is the ultimate pocket writer's tool. This book presents clear solutions to niggling questions of grammar, punctuation, and usage, as well as handy points on how to write clear, concise prose. If you spend any time writing, professionally or recreationally, you will find this book invaluable. I give it four stars only because it's not quite comprehensive, and more complicated questions of punctuation and usage may require the consultation of the Chicago Manual of Style, or some similar volume.
Rating: Summary: This Book Should be on Every Office Desktop Review: Strunk and White's Elements of Style is still the most useful tool for clear and concise writing. There are occasions when I do consult 'Strunk and White' to verify that a phrase or word is the 'right one'. A decade ago, I worked at a law firm where each new associate was provided with an office furnished with a desk, a couple of chairs for clients, and a bookcase. A new Webster's dictionary and 'Strunk and White' were among the provided furnishings. Those perks ought to be offered at every firm where clear communication is becoming more and more vital.
Rating: Summary: EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION - A MAJOR KEY TO SUCCESS! Review: If you wish to communicate in an impressive and politically correct manner, then you have found the appropriate book. During the course of teaching business management, I have encountered adult students with university degrees who have no discernable concept of what constitutes proper English grammar and what does not. Some individuals have the unique ability to create words, not found in any English dictionary or thesaurus, which are totally unfathomable to anyone but the user. As for grammar, the phrases, "them there books," and "in regards to," absolutely crucify the English language, particularly when used by academic scholars! However, there are basic essential elements of English grammar every individual should be able to comprehend and use. One student of mine, a former high school teacher who was preparing her written business plan, repeated the word, "I" thirteen times in the first paragraph. This same paragraph also contained four incomplete sentences. When I asked her, out of sheer curiosity, what subjects she taught in high school, her answer was....English! My dearest wish was to discretely place a copy of this book in her briefcase. Not all of us are "masters" of the English language, and that is one of the reasons we can be extremely thankful this useful book exists. There is no question, "The Elements of Style" has been around for quite a few years, but the concepts do not change with time. In general, writing and speaking skills are an essential part of everyone's life; we should be able to effectively communicate with those around us. This is certainly true if you are part of the business world. Whether you are writing a letter, report, speech or book, you will find "The Elements of Style" one of your greatest assets. It is truly a classic book with an eloquent, timeless style.
