Rating: Summary: Totally Disgusting and True. Review: When I looked at the cover of this book it looked like it was science fiction. As I started reading it I was thinking, "Wait a minute this is all real. In this world where we all live there are microscopic monsters that can totally destroy the human race." I was just totally paranoid. Then when I read the vivid description of Ebola I was just terrified and for weeks I could't stop thinking about the poor people that died from this disease. I almost couldn't finish the book I was totally disturbed. When I did read it I found it to ve truly exceptional and I would recommend it to anyone who thinks that there life is horrible it will change your outlook on life and will make you think how lucky you are to be living in a place where you don't have to worry about dying from these infectious diseases.
Rating: Summary: A ten star book - teeming with things you don't want. Review: When I first read this book, it was years ago. For the first time in my life I was made aware of the clear and present danger of biological weaponry. It frightened the taste right out of my mouth. This is one book that will open your eyes to the possibility of what, if caught in enemy hands, can be done to us. It happened all over the world, the Ebola virus, so much more than the word "deadly" can describe it, and yes, even in Virginia. How we fight these things there is no way to tell. We can only hope that we are always one step ahead of the enemies. Dying from E-bola would be worse than being skinned and dipped in salted boiling water. It is as horrible a scourge as mankind will ever see (we hope) and the book, which is non fiction and very true to life, has stayed with me for all these years. I think of it particularly today, as biological weaponry becomes closer to reality than any of us ever thought it would.
Rating: Summary: Horrifying ... and Completely True! Review: I first heard of this book as I was flipping through of the pages of my literature book while the class was reading a short story aloud. Of course I had already read the story (the droning of people reading the story gets annoying, so I ignore them and read it myself) and in the recrommended reading section I found The Hot Zone. It was actually reviewed by Stephen King as truly horrifying and what he wrote was nothing compared to what this was. I was surprised to find out that it was about the Ebola virus, but that just made it all the more interesting. I had to stop at certain parts, for just a moment, as I had to stop myself from using my imagination too much. After this book, which was a very quick read, I cannot help but say I was obsessed with Ebola for a week (maybe more!) and it has also made me think about how close we were to getting that deadly virus ... it was just outside of Washington D.C., in Reston, VA. What a nightmare! Oooo you will love this book! Well, if you like real life horror stories, that is.

Rating: Summary: Captivating Review: I had to read this book for school and was so scared to because it was really long. Well, I started reading it and liked it. There were some parts that it got boring but overall it was a very exciting book. It's just really weird to read this and think that something so horrible as the Ebola virus was in America. I learned a lot from this book and recommend it to people who like science related books.
Rating: Summary: Great Thriller Review: I suggest each of Richard Preston's books because they are so good. The Hot Zone is my favorite. Biologists and civilians alike will enjoy this edge-of-your- seat thriller. The scariest part is that the story is true. Thrillers are most terrifying when they are true. This book is well-written and is about the outbreak of the Ebola virus. Great for people who liked the movie Outbreak.
Rating: Summary: Discriptive book about a terrifying Virus Review: I just have to say one thing... WOW. I am doing my I.S.U. (independant study) on Ebola, and half of my notes came from one book! I had about 3 other books too, It's just so descriptive, and for all ages, it seems like he puts it into perspective how old you are. He isn't all that formal like some of those other books. Sometimes he talks in the present tense, which would make it much more easy to read. I just love his style of writing, and how he describes things. Like one of the previous reviewers says, he uses imagery to help describe his things. THE BEST BOOK EVER!! READ IT!!
Rating: Summary: Horrifying Account of the Deadliest Disease on Earth Review: This is one of the best books I've ever read. Some of the descriptions were pretty gruesome, so don't read it if you have a weak stomach. It is fairly quick to read, but once you start, you can't put it down. The plot is horrifying and makes you think a lot. Be prepared to be obsessed with Ebola for about a month after reading it.
Rating: Summary: Facinating True Story Review: The Hot Zone is a very interesting book. Although the novel is a little long, it is easy and quick to read. Preston writes in a journalist style giving many details and facts. To help the reader fully understand the character of viruses Preston uses metaphors and analogies. For example, he explains that a hundred thousand virus particles can fit in an area the size of the period at the end of this sentence. With his use of imagery, the reader can picture almost every scene and setting described in the book. Preston's purpose of writing The Hot Zone is not only to inform people about the various types of viruses and their outbreaks, but also to give his opinion that these viruses will one day have a serious outbreak in the United States.
Rating: Summary: Horrifying Truth Review: In The Hot Zone, Richard Preston brings forth the horrifying truth to the American people that we are vulnerable to a catastrophe such as an Ebola outbreak. The novel outlines events that took place from 1967 until the 1990s. The novel begins with the story of Charles Monet, containing the speculations of contracting the Marburg virus, his symptoms, and his death in Nairobi. Preston also gives the gory details of the 2 other filoviruses that are contractible to humans and the strain of Ebola that has only been found in monkeys in the Reston Monkey House. This novel hooks you and doesn't let go until the very end. Preston keeps you guessing at every turn and you constantly wonder "what if". It makes you realize that not matter what we as the human race does, we cannot avoid some kind of catastrophe like an Ebola outbreak. It may not be likely that right now that a species killer will hit the human race, but as the population of human beings grows and impedes nature, the risk of the human race being drastically cut increases. In all, The Hot Zone by Richard Preston is wonderful book to expand ones horizons on worldly issues and scientific matters.
