Rating: Summary: Will a terrifying disease destroy mankind? Review: What is the Ebola virus and it's history? You'll find the answer here. Preston wrote this book around the time of the last Ebola scare in Zaire and it became a hot seller. An overall good and realistic read!
Rating: Summary: Good book, but Preston leaves out some people Review: I good book.... especially those who don't know much about hemmoragic fevers, but Preston leaves out some important people who worked hard against the first Ebola outbreak. Also, some of the "eyewitness accounts" got a little mixed up ( if you listen to interviews with Frederick A. Murphy, and others, they are a lot different than the accounts that came from them in the book ). All in all it's a good book, but if you already know a lot about the subject matter, you might get a little fed up.
Rating: Summary: An excelent book of virus Review: It is great how Preston write this true story and how the people of it explain to him what was happening. It is a very interesting book.
Rating: Summary: The most interesting (and horrifying) book you'll ever read! Review: "The Hot Zone" by Richard Preston is a chilling account of many cases and outbreaks of the Marburg and Ebola viruses. The book includes a gruesome three-page description of the effects of Ebola on the human body. It tells how the viruses traveled from the remote jungles of Africa, to right here in the USA. The book tells the stories of many cases, from Kitum Cave to the outbreak of Ebola in a monkey house in Reston, Virginia. It also shows the "struggle for power" over these cases between the CDC and the Army. All in all, this book guarantees to be one of the most terrifying things you will ever read...because it is a true story.
Rating: Summary: I've seen better hands on a clock. Preston=zero talent Review: On of the worst I've read. Mostly dramatized unrelated segments of ibola virus outbreaks but just really poor writting makes you wonder how this stuff gets to print. Was probably written on the fly to take advantange of brief media whirlwind of ibola hype. Enjoy the yacht Preston.
Rating: Summary: The Hot Zone is a spine-chilling look at the Ebola virus. Review: There is a virus that kills nine out of ten of its victims so quickly and grumesomely that the name rings fear in the hearts of the biohazard experts. This deadly virus is now airborne and about to hit the suburbs of a major American city, in the winter of 1989. This book is a spine-tingling true story about the Ebola virus. Richard Preston does this with a detailed look at this deadly virus. The Hot Zone is full of vived detail of what this virus does to the body. This book is all true and that's what so scary about it.
Rating: Summary: A tragically frightening novel about a deathly virus. Review: This book is scarier than any Stephen King. Compared to this true life story Stephen King is a fairy-tale. It was a great book!!
Rating: Summary: Graphic violence from macro to micro Review: Hooked on the spectacle of a man being reduced to a sack of Viral soup, I found my imagination lingering on the finer genitalic details. My thoughts drifted to the seventh graders I teach... this book should work well with any one over the age of 12, and especially well with 12 yearolds. Personally I prefer "The Coming Plague" , greater detail, thought provoking on a level unseen in the Hot Zone, less exploitative of the simmering gore. Want an easy read that is both interesting, and gives you the shudders ? Read the Hot Zone.
Rating: Summary: A terrifying true story! Review: This is a story of the Ebloa virus, and how it has evolved throughout the years, starting in Africa. Many thought that the virus would never be a problem in the U.S., but in 1989 it was found in a D.C. suburb. It is a story that will scare you to death because it is all true, and could happen at any time. I would recomend it to almost anyone, becuase it is so real.
Rating: Summary: Really, Really, Good... Review: overall, this book is pretty good. I highly recommend reading it while i won't promise that you'll love it. Very informative, yet gross. My personnal opinnion is that it is the best book i have ever read. i gave it an 8 because i know not all people will love it. BUT IT IS A MUST READ!!
