Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Fascinating subject. Poor writing.
Review: Ebola and other currently emerging diseases are frightening and fascinating, and so the story of this novel is important. However, the writing style unfortunately presents the medical research of ebola outbreaks like a poorly written dime store horror novel. Preston makes bizarre metaphores for the ebola virus and its host with every imaginable food item from mashed potatoes to jelly donuts. Too much time is spent on character set-up in between actual events - and he makes real people sound like lifeless figments of his imagination. Still, the events are fascinating and his early analysis of the disease is accurate. If you're looking for a decent horror story, this is probably as good as any. If you're looking for science - look hard - it's there, but you have to swallow Preston's sensationalist writing style to get to it.

Summary: You must read this book! It's amazing!
Review: I couldn't put it down, and the fact that it all really happened made the novel read that much more quickly.

Summary: Chilling Details!
Review: I am a young teenage who chose to read and do a review on this book for science. I am not much into to science books bu this was a about a time not to long ago when I wasn't born yet. It was neat to learn a little history while I was at it. This was an excellent book that gave chilling details and encounters!

Summary: Revenge of the Germs!
Review: This book covers, in much more dramatic fashion, much of the same territory regarding Ebola and other hemorrhagic fevers as Laurie Garrett's huge, scholarly book The Coming Plague. For those who want to thoroughly understand the subject, I would whole heartedly recommend Garrett's book over The Hot Zone. For those who want the Cliff Notes version, and want an entertaining read along the way, the Hot Zone is it.

Both the Hot Zone and the Coming Plague have one thing in common. They both point out the fact that just because humans are now the dominant species on this planet does not mean that they will always remain so. Preston's essay in the final chapter of the Hot Zone where he opines that humans may be the virus infecting the earth and that Ebola, AIDS, and other deadly diseases are the earth's defense mechanism is intriguing. We can no longer take it for granted that mankind will survive as a species.

Summary: EXCELLENT! And more frigteningly, a true story!
Review: One thing that the summary, and even the following reviews failed to mention, is that this book is completely, and totally based on documented fact. How do I know this? I'm in the United States Army, and when I went through my 91T AIT, one of the persons involved in this (SSG Kurtis Klages) was an instructor of mine, as well as having met many of the other people involved. This happened, people! Nothing stated in the book is false as far as I could find, and believe me, I did my homework. Heck, the thing's about my job!

There are viruses out there that could easily take out 90% of the world's population within 6 months. Comforting thought, huh? But that's why we're here, and we do what we do. To make sure it doesn't happen!

Read the book!

Summary: A Consuming Read!!!
Review: I devoured this book on a 2 1/2 hour flight from Salt Lake City to DFW....compelling, scary, and altogether a realistic scenario. Every time I step on a plane now I wonder...is there someone on this flight who is a carrier of a deadly virus? Definitely food for thought.

Summary: without thought this is the best book i have ever read
Review: I was in class last year and a teacher of mine brought this book into class and read only the first ten pages. To my amazement I sat there and listened very attentive to every word he said. So that same day as soon as classes ended i headed for the book store and bought this book. Keep in mind I am not one to just pick up a book and read. But this book caught my attention and from the moment i picked it up it didn't leave my hands. I read in the car, at school, and even when I went out to eat with my family. This has got to be the best book i have ever read. I'm on my third time reading it now. The book is just so good that you have to read it more than once to take it all in. If you, the reader have any doubts, don't. Get this book you will not be disappointed.
