Rating: Summary: I couldn't put it down! Review: From beginning to end, this book will keep your attention. I found myself reading every chance I got. Every page made me want to learn more about this virus and where it came from. Richard Preston gives a written and very descriptive account of Ebola and the treats is causes.
Rating: Summary: Diamonds Review: The Hot Zone, a nonfiction drama by Richard Preston, is a terrifying story about the Marburg virus and its rampage through the United States. It all begins in 1980 on New Years day, when a character named Charles Monet travels into the dangerous rain forests in central Africa. From the opening page to the back cover, the reader cannot help but be hooked on this amazing true story. Out of the first 10 victims who were infected, 9 die within days of contracting the disease. The deaths are described in gory detail, because a disease like this can do awful things to the human body. It totally destroys everything inside of you, ultimately leaving you shriveled with nothing left but rotted skin. This book should come with one of those signs you see in front of that big scary roller coaster at Great Adventure. DO NOT RIDE IF: You have a heart condition Have a weak stomach Pregnant etc. I really liked this book, because it is extremely involving and always keeps you on your toes. It is like just when you think everything is all right; something else goes completely wrong. Just the threat of the virus coming out alone was gripping, and then when the outbreaks occurred, you couldn't help but be really interested. This is by far one of the best books I have ever read because it is one of the few where I can say it kept my attention from the opening page to the back cover.
Rating: Summary: It wasn't great..It wasn't bad..It was a soup of mediocrity Review: But who am I to say? I have never written a book, nor do I plan on winning an award from M.I.T. But I am an NPR listener, so I suppose I have some intellectual credibility. First things first, congratulations to Mr. Preston for making a lot of money on this book. I applaud anybody who does what they want to do for a living. And the book was pretty good. There are some things I found tedious about the book. The author seemed to go on and on and on and on (I'm doing this for effect) about how scientists and military personnel got dressed and undressed in their biohazard outfits. You only have to explain to me once how to take precautions against a scary virus. I did like how the author paused to consider the global, environmental, and somewhat philosophical implications this virus has toward human existence. It's not everyday you wake up and the earth is mad at you because you've made too many babies. Believe me, the next fundraiser I see to save the rainforests, I'll write a check. Buy the book. Give Amazon.com and Mr. Preston some business. It's a good read. And if you can take away anything from this book, please remember non to step in bat droppings when you happen to be strolling through the belly of a disease infested cave located in the heart of Africa.
Rating: Summary: This book is contagious!! Review: I actually got sick just by reading it for the event that took place in this book seemed so real. His through research and rigor as a journalist must have made this possible. Despite all this, I have two reservations. First, I feel that the plausibility of biological disaster occurring purely accidentally (e.g., some pc in a culture plant that is growing a certain virus strain for thepapeutic purposes fails for an unknown reason) sounds scarier than terrorist's premeditated attacks. This is because we can do little to prevent such incidents, and it seems so probable that such accidents sould happen in real life. Second, his writing style somewhat disturbs me. At times, I wanted to skip some paragraphs which appeared unnecessary and added nealy nothing to the story. Still all in all the book was fun to read and made me think of the darker side of human nature and the terror of a worst nightmare happening to us even without the knowledge of a would-be-perpetrator. I am hopeful that he writes yet another compelling book.
Rating: Summary: this was an entertaining Review: it was entertaining and gave me a lot of knowledge I never new about viruses.
Rating: Summary: Preston, please stop the melodrama! Review: This was a fabulous book, in many respects. Ebola is a fascinating disease. The circumstances and human interest was great. The romance stank. Mr, Preston needs to stick to what he's good at. He couldn't write a romance to save his life, but he is the most talented writer of non-fiction I've ever read. If you like books about diseases, definitely read "The Hot Zone". But beware of the rather poor quality of the romantic interest.
Rating: Summary: This book was great! Review: This book was unbelivable. I couldn't put it down! It was just as Stephen King said it keeps getting worse. The way Richard wrote the bleeding out scene was great. I felt like I was actually there watching this person vomit blood.
Rating: Summary: Scary but true Review: This is a great book for those who want to go into the field of biochemistry! When you open to page one you enter "The Hot Zone!" I loved the book and I hope you will too! Doctors and future ones~ you all will probably enjoy it and even just anyone who wants to read a thrilling nonfiction book! Happy Reading! :)
Rating: Summary: Paranoia invoking Review: This book seriously makes us question man's inferior exsistance on this planet. Will the emergance of deadly biological agents be the beginning of mass extinction? I doubt that anyone can truly answer that question, but it is highly plausable that with the new millenium, as the surplus population increases, new / mutating viruses will come to our attention. This book begs one to ask themselves several questions. Richard Preston is a skilled writer, and it is evident that much research has been conducted, but this story is not completly accurate. It seems that Preston was more intent on frightening the reader than he was on focusing on the truth.
Rating: Summary: this book was absolutely awesome an attention grabber fron t Review: this book was an absolute thriller. I love every minute of reading this book. Especially since the the realism and threat that this could play in the world today, imagine an outbreak of ebola or something as dangerous as ebloa. There is no cure, so what would we do? Any way I loved this book it is probably my most favorite of all time, and I hope that when you read it you'll be as awestruck as I was.
