Rating: Summary: A Good Idea Gone Bad Review: As a member of a traditional African-American Sorority I was thrilled with the idea that a book had come out that encompasses the history behind all BGLO's. I was hoping for a book that gave the reader a comprehensive and equal overview of all African American Fraternities & Sororities. However, this is not the case as I first noticed on the cover of the book where only the author's fraternity is represented along with the author's sister sorority. This work is meant to be equal and yet to any other greek reader of another organization just the cover is somewhat insulting in that just two organizations are represented, and not the others. Hello? Are there not seven other organizations that this book is about? Then why is just the author's fraternity & sorority shown the cover? If the logic was being first, then that goes against the idea of a equal presentation of BGLO's history which is what I thought this book was supposed to be about. Is also interesting to note that the author's sister sorority has more written about it then any other sorority presented in the text. I would not recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about African American Greek organizations based on the fact that it protrays a skewed & biased view. Which sad to say is typical in Greek organizations. The author fell short of his primary goal in a BIG way!
Rating: Summary: A Must Have! Review: As a librarian, I would recommend that all HBCU and high school students review this title. Students will greatly benefit from the historical orgins of African American Sororities and Fraternities. I was impressed with the level of accuracy and detail for each organization. Let us celebrate and enjoy our history!
Rating: Summary: A Rich History Revealed! Review: I recieved a copy of this History lesson less than one week ago. I must say that the thoroughness and pride Mr. Ross put into this manuscript is unparalled by any author in history. Mr. Ross has done a superb job recording detailed facets of the traditional BGLOs. I would encourage every member, chapter, and historian of a BGLO to purchase this book. Way to go Lawrence!
Rating: Summary: Book I couldn't put down Review: This book is very informative and very positive. You learn a lot of things about the different organizations of the NPHC and see the different people (celebrities and other members) who have such a positive look about their organization. I know it is hard for me to put it down. I encourage you to get this book. The statements in this book are surprising and makes you think about things too. Even though I'm not a part of the NPHC, I know that as a member of a greek organization, it's informative to know the depth of the history of these organizations and why they started. Many people have questions about that and wonder why there are African-American organizations like the NPHC. I encourage people to get this book. I truly enjoyed and still am.
Rating: Summary: A Terrific Book! I Highly Recommend it! Review: The most striking thing about DIVINE NINE is that it is the only book of its kind in existence. No other book has chronicled the important histories of all these African American Greek organizations. In addition, the book is a lovely one, with terrific photos. I highly recommend this one.
Rating: Summary: The Divine Nine Review: Finally, a book has been written that discusses the nine African American Fraternity & Sororities. One need only try to hunt up the history books of each of these fantastic organizations to discover how exceedingly rare information is out there on this topic. While there is a book or two that give a smidgeon of historical perspectives such as From Here To Fraternity, or Bairds' Manual, none are as comprehensive and easy to read and understand as this book. This book should be required to be on the shelves of our nations' high schools and colleges. The identification of important men and women associated with each organization is a tremendous resource. As a researcher in the area of African American fraternities and sororities, and Western Region Historian for Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. I can say that I am very pleased to have this resource book and will unequivocably recommend it to others.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book! Review: The author has done an outstanding job of giving the reader a thorough overview of Black Greek-Lettered organizations. Time and time again, I found myself saying, "Really? - I didn't know that!" Black Fraternities and Sororities are a part of the fabric of African America and this book does an excellent job of placing these organizations and their members in the context of the history and achievements of the Black experience. I recommend it highly!
Rating: Summary: Highly Recomended Review: I love this book! It only has the general info on the NPHC organizations, but it is very informative. It has interviews with celebs and others on their expirences. Any aspirant should get this book. Its good to know about all the BLGO's even if you have already made up your mind. I highly recommend!
Rating: Summary: It left me asking even more questions.... Review: I read the Divine Nine seeking detailed information about how all nine sororities and fraternities were started and about the founder's visions. But this source of information lacked in areas and left me asking more questions!!! I think if you truly wanted to know about a fraternity or a sorority you have to find the research yourself. This book was not a A+ but rather a C-!!
Rating: Summary: excellent source of information Review: This book is an excellent source of information about the nine historically black greek letter organizations. No, it does not tell you the entire history of each organization but there is enough to get a feel for the basic history and goals of the organizations as well as information of interest such as well known members of each organization. High praise for the author.
