Summary: Working on the Edge
Review: Incredible! Having lived in Alaska for 3 years, serving in the U.S. Coast Guard, I can attest to the authors gripping portrayal of working in this profession. Spike Walker delivers a gritty, real and inside look at king crab fishing in the Bering Sea. I have never read a book that was more in depth on the job as well as the off boat life of a fisherman. Having seen what he describes in the book first hand, with the tragedies and glories, this is one book you will not want to pass up. I would reccomend this to anyone who enjoys stories of the sea. I have owned this book for 2 years and still read it often. This is one novel that won't sit on your shelf for long. The Alaskan king crab fishing fleet is an example of brave men and women, at their finest, and sometimes their worst. Laden with success and sorrow, you will definately get a better understanding of America's most dangerous job, and develop a deep appreciation of what these men and women do every season to provide for the rest of us.

Don't hesitate any longer, get this book today.

Summary: A sea novel of which legends are made.
Review: Mr. Spike Walker takes you from elation to utter dispair as you read through detailed accounts from the primary sources. Those of us who know the sea will only have a deeper respect for its truly awesome and untold powers. Those that have not been able to experience the sea will feel as though they have after reading Mr. Walkers' accounts. "Working on the Edge" will ignite a sense of adventure and longing to experience all that life has to offer. By no means will I pass on without visiting the Alaskan coastline after reading this book. Mr. Walker's experiences will bring to light part of the core of human existance with the world around us. This is truly an incredible story of one man's account of some of his years of life. I feel that I have not only read a great book, but as though I have met an amazing individual who shared some of himself with me. This glimpse into life is not to be missed. Give this book away when you are done so that others can experience it too.

Summary: An exciting, gripping adventure from cover to cover!
Review: Mr. Walker has a true gift of "painting" detailed illustrations with words! I felt as if I had been through every intense moment with these brave men and women as they lived and died on the high seas of Alaska. A terrific read!

Summary: Far superior to The Perfect Storm
Review: Recommended to me by professional fishermen on Monhegan Island, Maine, this book captures the excitement, danger, and almost intolerable conditions in which people fish for crab. I couldn't put it down. It makes The Perfect Storm seem an exercise in journalistic opportunism to take advantage of the Navigation (Dava Sobel) phenomenon. This isn't a book about remote people and conditions researched by some journalist who's never been to sea. This is authentic and fantastic

Summary: In the tradition of Jack London
Review: So exhilarating I felt I was on the deck next to Spike launching one of those 750 lb. crab pots! This is the kind of adventure that Jack London would write about with such vivid detail and emotion. In fact, despite London's adventure-driven soul, I doubt he'd want to ship-on after reading of Spike's harrowing exploits. If this book doesn't get your heart racing after reading about Mike Doyle's survival after being slammed inside a crab pot, swept overboard and rapidly descending in the bitter, dark cold of the Gulf of Alaska, then you are legally dead! Make's the "Perfect Storm" sound like a warm-up exercise.

Summary: Experience the feel of commercial crab fishing
Review: Spike Walker does an excellent job of sharing his experience on crab boats in Alaska. Reading this book will give you some understanding of the life these men and women live at sea and around the fishing industry in the 49th state. You get a sense of the danger, the elation, and the disappointment that the world's most dangerous profession has to offer. This book really grabbed me by the collar and took me for a ride on a crabbing vessel! This author's writing style, as well as the story itself will keep you mesmerized. You won't be able to put it down, and it will make you appreciate the job that you have!

Summary: Adventure gone berzerk!
Review: Spike Walker slams us into the icey grip of alaska's crab fishing industry like a "rogue wave". His ability to put the reader on the deck of an alaskan crab boat and suffer the cold misery is unparalelled! Stories of hardship and heroisim abound in this book. The great Jack London could not write a better account. We, the reader are forced to look upon our mundane existance and somehow find our day to day complaints sound rather hallow. Mr. Walker makes us want to stand alittle strighter and try alittle harder. If you love the outdoors, this book is a "must read". I've read it twice!!
