Rating: Summary: An excellent introduction to basic PChem. Review: In 1969 I graduated with a BS in Chemistry. When I compare my Sienko and Plane 101 textbook with Chang's I feel like I'm reading an introductory book in Physical Chemistry. Lately I'm reviewing a lot of topics I have learned years ago, and, for Chemistry, I have chosen this book. It is full of accounts relating this science to everyday experience, besides it contains many learning paradigms never applied in texbooks of yesteryear. I feel that I have in my hands a serious and entertaining book which is bringing me up to date with my first academic love, Chemistry. If I want a deeper look to a topic, I still pick Castellan. For an edition of the book with the use of Calculus I would have given it 5 stars.
Rating: Summary: pretty solid book Review: its a good book, not stellar like the campbell's biology book (highly recommended for ap bio and ive heard its good for college bio) but i like the examples and the explainations. the review sections at the end could be numbered better, for those of us who are math minded people 5.1 should be the same as 5.10 etc. it just gets annoying that is all.
Rating: Summary: General look on chemistry. Review: The most significant thing about this text book is it's great generality, as a result of wich it can prove to be unsuficient for a deep study but a great help as a first reference. Also it would be interesting to say that Raymond Chang makes a very complete sinthesis throw out the book making it readible by almost anybody. As a result this text book can be most usefull to those beginning any studys on chemistry.
Rating: Summary: Pretty good, but spend $6 more and get the new edition Review: This book is fairly clear and concise, but if you're going to buy the book, why not spend six extra bucks and buy the new edition?
Rating: Summary: do yourself a favor and find a copy of zumdahl's book Review: this book is the pits (it is actually worse than that). had i depended on this book to pass chemistry i would have failed SO i found an old copy of zumdahl's and everything became so much easier. i am sure this is a fine book if you do not need to pass a class. it can be pretty entertaining, but if you need to learn something save your money.
Rating: Summary: Very, Very poor book Review: This book is too broad. It is nearly impossible to find charts and tables, and it does not leave the user with an impression of understanding. Equasions are buried unders lines of text and are not pointed out or highlighted. Reader must pour through several paragraphs to discover the meanings of pictures, charts and diagrams. Vital information hard to find. Not a very good book for referencing, or quick study. Does not convey abstract concepts and ideas well. Only buy this book if you want some very in-depth reading.
Rating: Summary: Chemistry 7th Edition Review: This book was absolutely horrible. Beyond the many typos and mathematical errors, the author skips around between topics and never really gets to the point. All of the example problems are great if your instructor only gives you problems using standard volumes, temperatures and pressures (unlike the end of chapter exercises). I normally keep my books, but this one is going at the end of the semester!
Rating: Summary: Great book Review: This is one of the best, I mean BEST, chemistry books I've ever come across. During AP chemistry, our class was given a choice of about 5 other books, because it was the first time the teacher was teaching AP chem. Strangly enough, I was the only one that picked Chang... and I was the only one in the class to get a 5.
Rating: Summary: clearly written Review: This text is clearly written and explains basic chemical principles very well. At certain points it lacks details and depth. But for beginning students, this might be a plus. For a slightly higher level text, see Chemistry by Oxtoby, Freeman, and Block. For a somewhat more innovative approach to college level general chemistry, see the text by Moore, Stanitski, and Jurs. Cheaper resources for struggling students include: The Complete Idiot's Guide to Chemistry, Survival Guide for General Chemistry, and Chemistry for Dummies.
Rating: Summary: Surely you must be joking!?! Review: This text is riddled with errors, how could anyone in their right mind give it a glowing 5 star review?
