Summary: Good beginners resource.
Review: A little bit of everything without getting too complicated. Focus seems to be on gas and TIG welding, since the author evidently uses those methods primarily. The section on MIG welding is weak compared to the other chapters but it's better than most beginners books anyways.

Summary: Not what I expected!!
Review: As someone who had never used a welder before, this book was invaluable to me. I found this book to be simply written, with no-nonsense information and graphics. There is also little of the author tooting his own horn; he presents his past projects to show you what you could do in the future, not to impress you with his vast knowledge. The book is designed to get a new welder up and running, but not so fast that they are just bad welders. There is an emphasis on simple exercises to get you familiar with your tools before you start on big projects. The science of welding is presented in very simple laymans terms, no calculus or physics required. I will say that I actually started backwards on the 'lessons' in this book; I started with a mig, then went to a buzzbox, and am now ramping up on oxy/acet. This is exactly reverse of what the author recommends, but I worked with what I had access to at the time. I recommend you start out with this book and the sci.engr.joining.welding newsgroup; you will be very happy with the results.

Review: Beginners! For all of the simple to advanced projects, this book is the answer. The author explains things in a very organized and straight forward manner. For example he starts with metal basics and heat control, and then moves to welding equipment and safety. Fitting and jigging is one of the very important aspects covered in a chapter. After wards, each type of welding, cutting, brazing, and soldering is explained in a chapter.

This book helped me understand what are the difficulties I will face in my welding project of a race car. For example, Titanium is not easy to weld regardless of the method of welding that is used.

Keep in mind that this book will not go into details about metal spraying, electrical requirements for big shops, or ways to weld gears to shafts. This book is only for the beginner, and maybe fun to read for the pro.

Summary: A great Introduction or refresher to welding
Review: Clear and concise ..many useful tables..a good investment

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Excellent beginner to intermediate reference
Review: Definitely a "must have" for anyone starting out in welding or metal fabrication. I would strongly recommend reviewing this book prior to purchasing any welding equipment.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Fairly thorough, practical
Review: Despite a thorough job, his section on gas welding aluminum has errors. Hydrogen gained popularity over acet. during WW2 when acet was rationed to shipyards. Aircraft factories used either gas routinely. Antiborax flux has been notoriously unreliable for 8 yrs, now. The cobalt blue glasses are dangerous and have been superceded by the special TM Technologies safety-tested TM2000 lenses for 10 yrs. His steel welding information is very good, and well-researched.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Good overview of welding but too general.
Review: Finch does a good job of identifying and describing welding process and techniques. I would recommend this bood to someone trying to decide what type of equipment to buy and it's capabilities. However, for specific process (i.e., MIG welding of aluminum) it is a little more general than I was hoping. Not much in the way of trouble shooting welding probems for each type of welding described.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Above-average
Review: Good overall coverage of all types of welding. I was hoping for a more thorough coverage of arc welding, though. Text was clear and well presented.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: excellent resource
Review: great intro to oxyacetylene welding/cutting; handy tips to quickly improve proficiency; easy-to-read charts that will continue to be an invaluable reference; good detail on arc/mig/tig. the section on building jigs saved me much time and money. entertaining welding anectdotes interspersed throughout...finch refers to those who weld as WELDORS...satisfying book by a man who truly loves his craft.
