Rating: Summary: If you are thinking about getting chickens YOU MUST OWN THIS Review: ...or check it out from the library, I guess that would be fine too. But anyway, I have raised chickens for eggs, show, and pets for about nine years. This was the first book about them that I bought and, despite collecting more books over the years, remains my favorite. Easy to read and understand, it proves that chickens are really quite simple and fun!

This book gave me the answer! I now get the eggs I've been waiting for.. It's full of GOOD practical advice. I recomend it to everyone, old and new chicken people!
Rating: Summary: Outstanding Starter book for Chickens Review: I highly recommend this book to anyone starting or considering the keeping of Chickens in your yard - be it large or small, rural or not. Rating: Summary: Best Book for Beginners Review: I started my backyard flock with only this book for reference. It's got really good information and is a really fun read - lots of humor mixed in with the great information. If you're thinking about starting a small flock and you're a beginner, this is the book you should buy. It's got great information including a chapter with basic poultry terminology, info on hatching chicks, chicken diseases, raising chickens for eggs or for meat, and a whole lot more. And it's all written in everyday English that even a girl from the city like me can understand. Buy this book!
Rating: Summary: A little outdated Review: It states in the book to have the temp. in a still air incubator at 102 degrees. BAD, very bad that is too high. Copyrighted in 1976 and the info shows. My opinion go with 'Storey Guide to ...' books. Alot more detailed and more updated information. Vague real vague. I felt it was a waste of money.
Rating: Summary: Informative and funny Review: Not only is this the most comprehensive guide available for the would-be chicken farmer, it is also just a funny book. I would read it if I had no poultry aspirations for Luttman's plain-spoken wit and common sense mentality. The fact that it is a chicken resource beyond compare is almost just a bonus. Buy two copies. You'll give one to a friend.
Rating: Summary: not just for the birds Review: This book gives the reader a good view of how to raise and care for chickens. It feels like the author is speaking right to you. I got more information from this book than any other how to raise chickens book. Humor is entwined throughout this book and as we all know chickens can be quite humourous in their actions! I'm sure you will enjoy this book for its stories and helpful information.

Rating: Summary: #1 book on chickens Review: This is the first book on chickens we ever bought. It was after seeing the late actor Jimmy Stewart on the old Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and hearing him talk about the small flock of laying hens he had at his place in the heart of Beverly Hills that we checked the local zoning laws where we lived at the time and found we to could have hens. And then we got involved in 4 H with our son and they in turn recommended this book. It is by far the BEST book for anyone who has a small piece of property and zoning laws that permit keeping chickens. It discusses everything you need to know from the simply housing they need, the feed and water issues and how not to upset the neighbors. So if you are interested in having a small flock get the book and get informed before you get the chickens.
Rating: Summary: Great introduction to keeping chickens Review: Very sensible and easy to read. All aspects of keeping chickens dealt with. Highly recommended.
