Rating: Summary: Not what it seems Review: Ok, it was well written yes. BUT, if you are looking for a book like the hotzone or or demon in the freezer this is nothing like them. It has a lot more to do with Lyme desease which by the way IS NOT a weaponized virus and is ludacris to say it is, then it does any real threats against population. A really really good book about weaponized virus's and operation programs is BIOHAZARD by Ken Alibek or Germs by Judith Miller, Stephen Engelberg, and william broad.
Rating: Summary: Save your money and time Review: Poor editing, such as mispelled names, and lack of footnoting to back up decade old made up theories. For such as recent book it has not kept up with the times, like 6+ months before release. The latest reports are that with the building coming under control of home land defense, security has been increased, along with spending to bring this old building into shape. The only good thing about it is if you like conspiracy theories grab it because the author blames almost every animal to human transfered disease for the past 50 year on this place. (...)
Rating: Summary: Lab 257 Review: Thank you, thank you, thank you to Mr. Carroll for having the courage to write this enlightening book. As a chronic Lyme disease sufferer for 14 years, it was always my gut feeling that this horrible disease somehow originated at Plum Island, but was never quite able to put all the details together. Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined that my illness might have originated from a Nazi Germany biological warfare program. This is a very bizarre illness with psychiatric, neurologic, arthritic and cardiac manifestations. Many Lyme sufferers are also coinfected with Bartonella, Babesia, Ehrlichia, Mycoplasma fermentins and various other pathogens. Now it is easy to see why the government has not helped the Lyme community in developing a reliable test to diagnose this. Now it is easy to see why we have received little help from the government for the development of a reliable test. No good test equals no diagnosis = no problem. The government would have a massive lawsuit on their hands for all the people that have suffered this inhuman disease and all the people in the future who it will affect. Lyme disease is reaching epidemic proportions. The undiagnosed segment of Lyme sufferers is probably at about 75%. This book is probably the most important read for Americans today. Thank you to Mr. Carroll for this wonderful piece of investigative reporting. His research is invaluable.

Rating: Summary: gripping, with some unanswered questions Review: the "Canadian" geese inaccuracy is pretty disturbing. Didn't this guy talk to any real biologists/birders? Am only a third of the way through the book, and don't think it's written very well. Again, good ideas, but repetitious to the point of being hackneyed.
Rating: Summary: A frightening look into a secret world Review: This is a chilling book and an excellent read. We've known about the government's research into biological weapons for a long time, but Lab 257 just makes it more real. For an excellent account of human experimentation involving biological agents and much much more, I recommend In The Name of Science: A History of Secret Programs, Medical Research and Human Experimentation by Andrew Goliszek.
Rating: Summary: Makes you think Review: This is a great book and Michael Carroll pulls together the pieces to create an interesting whole story. He starts off with the facts and details of where three major disease epidemics, two human, the other animal, and attempts to build a case that Plum Island was the location that they came from. Carroll makes you think as he compiles interesting facts obtained by interviews, investigation and information gotten by the freedom of information act. Anyone who is wondering where some of the exotic diseases in the USA today, where they originated and the like will be very interested in this book. Carroll's book is well documented, however, his endnotes lack numbers that link quotes and sources, which can make it a little difficult to track the evidence he uses. All told though, Carroll's book definately compiles very interesting evidence that may point to Lab 257 as the source of our recent epidemics.
