Summary: The BEST quick-start book to learn Algebra..
Review: If you have been away from Algebra for a while or even if you have just started learning Algebra this book is for you. The authors have done a truly masterful job of explaining the basic concepts of Algebra. But more than that, the book has frequent tests and exercises which will help you to see if you are truly learning the stuff. Another great feature is that things are presented in a succinct and cogent manner. There is no patronizing prose or cute stories to bore you.

One thing I recommend strongly. Get well versed with chapters 2 through 4. These are the "nail and hammer" chapters in the book. Techniques like factoring, exponent manipulations, and simplification are explained. If you do not get these techniques nailed down you will be hounded with difficulties in later chapters. I re-read the chapters 3 times as well as worked the problems. I also recommend that as you go along begin solving pertinent problems from "REA'S Algebra & Trigonometry Problem Solver". This may take some time but your efforts will be well rewarded.

I highly recommend this text for anyone learning Algebra. But specially if you are like myself, just "doing" Algebra after a long hiatus, grab this book. A must have !

Summary: Where's my $10,000?
Review: Let me begin by saying that this book is wonderful. It is helping me prepare for my return to college in a way I thought impossible. I now have confidence in my abilities rather than fear.
I have a beef.
On page 3 the author boldly claims "Even we're not perfect. But we're close - so close that we've authorized our publisher $10,000 to any reader who can find a mistake in this book." It goes on to say that the publisher said. NO WAY.
Smart move.
Directly above this statement in PRETEST #1, Section 4, Question (d) there is a mistake! The line 1364 should be 1384. Please do the math and prove me wrong. Or, better, send me my imaginary check for $10,000. (You can find this page on the amazon site as excerpt 3)
While this is no major mistake it is worthy of the prize, no?

Summary: The self-assessment at the beginning is helpful
Review: The book begins with some self-assessment tests to determine whether one is prepared for algebra or should do further preparation in math. The authors suggest another book for those not yet ready for algebra. I like the self-assessments because they will either bolster confidence or prevent wasting time on algebra when math has not been mastered. I would suggest this book for a student who is considering taking algebra and has the discipline to spend part of her summer with this book.

Summary: Beat up the bully!
Review: This book helped me get an "A" after not having been to school in nearly a decade. It also is concise enough to efficiently use as a study supplement to a textbook.

Summary: a book that feels like a real teacher
Review: This book helped me re-learn my algebra skills after 9 years, for a college placement test. I passed!!! I strongly recommend this book as a valuable tool to study algebra.

Summary: Meh. Its alright. Good if you already know algebra though.
Review: This book is okay. I am a student and this book is okay if you have someone to explain it to you. if not, you may be confused on some of the things. they use some forms of solvng equations differently. but its good for refreshing your memory.

Summary: Excellent!!!!!
Review: This book is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I am getting ready to start college, and I wanted to major in theoretical physics but all I had ever taken was basic math through school. This book helped me learn more in one week than a high school teacher could in a month. If you want to learn algebra, and are good in arithmitic buy this book and see for yourself.

Summary: I've never studied Algebra before but I know it now
Review: This book is very good for Algebra reviewers or first time learners. One thing it lacks is drill and some explanations are hard to understand for first timers. I had to ask a friend to help me out and also look up better explanations online. Apart from that its fantastic. His attitude and writing approach are encouraging.

Summary: One of the top math books written for beginners
Review: This book quite simply tells it how it is. Primer books are usually obscure or skip steps. Anyone can follow along each page as every single heuristic and solution is given. Most math books are not self-teaching because they skip many steps or assume you know something. The authors here guide you like a small child who has never seen a linear equation. After reading this booklet you will become a master at algebra and word problems. This book raised my SAT score by 100 points! Surely you can afford a copy, it is actually a better teacher than most college professors. Math used to be my weak point and I avoided it, now I study it with the same rigor I applied to literature.
