Rating: Summary: The most lucid description yet. Review: First, he tames the unruly concepts of relativity and quantum theory. Then he presents the case for what may be biggest breakthrough in understanding reality in human history. This is a must read for anyone even slightly curious about the nature of existence.
Rating: Summary: Excellent book explaining a beautiful theory. Review: Me, being 13 yrs old, just finished this book, and anyone who says string theory is nonsense must read it, because it will change your mind. A must-read for all future physicists.
Rating: Summary: Greene does for Astrophysics what Sagan began Review: If M-Theory and Superstring is simplified any further, we can all skip undergraduate physics and spend our graduate school years unravelling M-Theory. Greene has done a marvellous job.I am a Family Physician and an author (titles in Metaphysics); I devoured The Elegant Universe in a week or less. Greene's ability to bring lofty astrophysical concepts to the masses in the trenches is only reminiscent of the hugely successful efforts of the late Carl Sagan. M-Theory is up to something. I wouldn't be surprised when, in a few years, "M" can explain that the universe is neither expanding forever, nor destined to shrink again; but that this dimension ("our" universe) is currently only undergoing a "pinch," an inflation, or is in the process of reparing one--a la Super String. Greene is honest--never hiding an "all this could be wrong" admission. But so what if it's all wrong? Newton invented Calculus to explain the world of his concept--and it worked some. If we "invent" "M" and it works, we will be that much further ahead. If it doesn't, we move on. Thanks to Greene, we the (lay)people can be part of this exciting and challenging paradigm. The "Elegant" in the book's title applies equally well to Greene's literary effort and style. Great job!
Rating: Summary: A insightful explanation of current scientific thinking Review: The first few chapters deal with Einsteins theories of relativity and do a great job of making sense of his thoughts. While the subject matter is deep, the author takes time to lay out the basic components in a manner that brings the reader into the discussion. While answers to the cosmic realities still escape current technology, this book takes the reader to the brink of understanding that is needed to examine todays mysteries. The book never gets out of hand and I still reread parts to help me comprehend what is happening on today's frontier.
Rating: Summary: Awesome and mind baffling Review: This book was an excellent description of the modern string theory. I felt that Greene honestly displayed his talent of science and has contributed his knowledge to the rest of us.
Rating: Summary: the best and most sweeping treatment ever encountered Review: I heard that this author was a genius in his field, but no one was sure if he could write. well, I can tell you that he certainly can. This is the most lucid, awe-inspiring treatments of the subject I have yet seen. No topic is forgotten, yet proper weight and caveats are given to all. The author never forgets that this is both an exciting and experimental new field. You really do feel like you are on the cusp of something great.
Rating: Summary: Good description of a bad theory Review: A great and well written book. Its only flaw is that the reader may come away with the impression that string theory is somehow accepted as valid. It isnt. String theory is unproven and most likely wrong. This is a historic book, in the future somebody is going to read this either with an amused chuckle or awe at its precience. My money is on the chuckle.
Rating: Summary: EXTREME PRAISE from a fellow author and student . Review: I am a physician anesthesiologist and author who has always been empassioned by astrophysics. Dr. Greene has been working with me in a tutorial fashion on the mathematics involved. He has an unbelievable talent for taking seemingly obscure and otherwise difficult concepts, boiling them down to wonderful descriptions that make you say "oh why didn't I think of it that way...". His whole book is like that...amazing...the guy is brilliant and yet can communicate these concepts in plain English better than anyone I have read. Bravo Dr. Greene!!!... Ken Giuffre MD, author of "The Care and Feeding of Your Brain" (Career Press 1999).
Rating: Summary: EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED SINCE "A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME" Review: DID YOU EVER WONDER HOW THE PRINCIPLE OF EQUIVALENCE(GRAVITY EQUALS ACCELERATION)GETS TO: GRAVITY EQUALS CURVED SPACE? GREENE'S BOOK TELLS YOU HOW. IN FACT LOTS OF HIS LOVELY ANALOGIES EXPLAIN LOTS OF THESE SCIENTIFIC FACTS THAT ARE EXPLAINED IN THE TECHNICAL JOURNALS ONLY BY FORMULAS.BRIAN GREENE'S "ELEGANT UNIVERSE" MENTIONS THAT CHILLING STATEMENT THAT STRING THEORY IS EITHER PERFECTLY CORRECT OR COMPLETELY WRONG. AND SO LOTS OF YOUNG PHYSICISTS ARE BETTING THEIR CAREERS ON SUPERSTRING THEORY.IT WAS VERY SURPRISING TO READ THAT EVEN IF WE FIND THE HIGGS PARTICLE WE WOULD STILL HAVE TO EXPLAIN IT RATHER THAN SAY THAT THE STANDARD MODEL IS NOW COMPLETE(PROBABLY THE SAME HOLDS IF WE FIND THE GRAVITON.SOME OF MY PHILOSOPHICAL FRIENDS JOKE ABOUT STRING THEORY:THE EXISTENTIALIST SAYS THAT IT IS A POINTLESS UNIVERSE;OR PHYSICISTS ARE STRETCHING THE POINT WITH STRING THEORY.IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT THEORETICAL PHYSICS HAS DONE SINCE EINSTEIN READ THIS BOOK.
