Summary: A superlative effort from an elegant mind!
Review: This review and guide to the depths and lofty heights of physics is a marvel in terms of strength of content and lucidity. The clarity and linguistic ease with which both elementary (as if there was such a thing!) and advanced concepts are delineated speaks to the erudition of primarily the subject, but also the editorial author. This book is truly a work deservant of note and appreciation from the lay and scientific communities. I could continue but would undoubtedly only repeat my admiration. Therefore, I close my comment with marvel and joy that I, and we my friends, are fortuitous enough to enjoy and this superlative effort.

Summary: Learning is everything.
Review: Books of this nature and complexity are treasures in their capacity to teach and inspire. Another book that reveals many hidden secrets of the universe is the novel, " Next : A Poetic Odyssey by Lee Frank.

Summary: Interesting Read
Review: The book starts out well but after a while it is hard to figure out what point is being made. Perhaps it is the nature of the subject itself and has nothing to do with the ability of the author or his intentions. Maybe in a few years Mr. Greene can write the next book on this topic and it will feel more "concrete"

Summary: Great, especially for the non-physicist:
Review: I was so impressed with the clear and yet quite complete way that the concepts were presented that I read excerpts to a person with absolutely no physics background and she actually understood most of it!! She said her head hurt after some of the quantum mechanics though :-) I think I'll try it out on my daughter next. ;-) This book is a fantastic overview for the concepts behind string theory without the math getting in the way of the clear theoretical intent. It would be good for anyone with decent brain and high school physics or better. So many people are scared away from physics by the math, this book is perfect in that sense... no math is required at all to understand this material.

Summary: READ IT!
Review: I reiterate: If you're the least bit interested, READ IT

Summary: A great book: one of the best physics books ever written
Review: Anybody who is interested in physics or in the old question of understanding the universe should read this book. Brian Green starts with an introduction into quantum mechanics, special and general relativity which is the best description for a general audience I have ever read and continues to give the reader a description of string theory which well might become the theory which finally solves the questions left open by the theories mentioned before.

Summary: I devoured this book!
Review: Even if you're not a physicist or mathematician, you can understand this book. Dr. Greene clearly and carefully makes his case for superstring theory potentially being the ultimate, unifying theory describing everything-- from quantum to cosmological phenomena. His love for physics shines throughout this book, and I found it irresistible. It was exciting to read.

Summary: Good reading.
Review: Various modern theories of "hyperspace" suggest that dimensions exist beyond the commonly accepted dimensions of space and time. Superstring theory predicts a universe of ten dimensions -- three dimensions of space, one dimension of time, and six more spatial dimensions. This book explains the concepts well. People who enjoy this book will also enjoy Cliff Pickover's book "Surfing through Hyperspace: Understanding Higher Universes in Six Easy Lessons."

Summary: A peek into answers of Life, the Universe, and Everything
Review: This book is absolutley amazing! Dr. Greene is an excellent writer and teacher. This book deals with the cutting-edge field of superstring theory--the idea that little vibrating loops of string are the most basic constituents of our universe, as opposed to "point" particles as presented for decades by the standard theory. Superstring theory may be the answer to Einstein's unrealized quest for a "Theory of Everything."

The book begins with a very lucid explanation of Einstein's Special and General Theories of Relativity, then leads into Quantum Mechanics, and discusses the inconsistencies between these views of physics on a large scale (General Relativity) and physics on a very small scale (Quantum Mechanics). Dr. Greene then goes on to explain superstring theory and how this new framework smooths out many of the contradictions between General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics.

Using this new understanding of superstring theory, Dr. Greene leads the reader through a myriad of otherwise mind-boggling topics such as: the beginning of the Universe, the possible existence of other universes, 11-dimensional existence, time travel, tears in the fabric of space, and black holes. It's written on a level for the layperson (like me) and I think most people will be able to understand and appreciate all the concepts presented.

Summary: understanding of the unknown.
Review: for one who is not tuned into understanding math, other than adding and subtraction of number, mr greene has opened my eyes to another world yet to be understood, not only by me but to many of his peer group.i believe we have a mr. enistein II on our hands.
