Rating: Summary: An eye opening book that really makes sense, Thanks harry! Review: I bought the book the roaring 2000's not knowing what it was really about. I found the book very interesting and very insightful. I have changed some of my thinking about investing for what is about to happen in america. What Harry said really made sense to me and I plan on setting up my portfolio as Harry described in his book. I believe that solid companies are the one's to invest in and to invest in different segments of the market. Harry points out in detail which segments he thinks will do well according to new technology and the S curve theory. It just makes sense. The book was full of great idea's and factual information. I highly recommend this book to all who are involved in investing. I have started my own Telecomm business that is exploding due to the up coming deregulation of all pulbic utilities such as gas and electric. I put people into this business with NO up front investment. Deregulation will create many Millionaires for those who are aware of what's about to happen. I thank Harry for helping me think ahead. Thanks Harry! See ya on the beaches! Matt
Rating: Summary: The times ...They are a a changing.... Review: I found Dent's book fascinating. The main thrust of what he talks about is that the world in which we live is changing rapidly. As business owners, executives and even employees we best pay attention to the world about us and be ADAPTABLE. Whether the specifics of Dent's research are 100% accurate or not is not the point... don't loose the forest for the trees. Those, as in many generations past, who became stuck were left in the dust.... remember the 8 track machines, wringer washers...we found a better way throse who didn't change still have to wait for a song to switch mid track...or hope they don't get their fingers caught in the wringer. It's the same for the internet...i'd rather shop at home and spend Saturday playing catch with my son tan fighting the masses at the MALL. I am excitied to be a part of the rapid changes in our world especially with the way the internet affects and influences our lives. This period of time is something that will be talked about for many generrations to come. It is a great period of transition and change that Harrys book further broadened my mind to some of the future possibilities we face as well as some of the challenges if we don't change... It reminds me of the stroies many of us have probably heard or told, " when I was your age I... had to walk to school 5 miles with hot potatoes in my hands just to stay warm." or "When I was your age you could get a bucket of corn and, a poop and a movie for a quarter." I only mention this because some of the comments are truly amusing.... It reminds me of what a good friend always says of critics... Critics are like unics at an orgy!!" Well imagine our kids and grandkids in 5, 10,20,30 years saying . "you used to what? you'd actually GO to the store, drive, fight traffic, wait in line, pay, drag the stuff home and the put it away.... man.... what a hassle!!!" . thank goodness for in home shopping and delivery services. Maybe someday soon corporate america will finally wake up completely and offer telecommuting and /or ownership for their "associates" to work from home? All of these changes are what I found exciting to read about in Harry's book. Its even more exciting to be in the game making things happen that will have a postive effect on future generations for years to come. as Dylan said.... .....the times they are a changin..... my question to all is... " are you changing with the times?"
Rating: Summary: Baloney with a smile is still just baloney! Review: Every 500 years a technology revolution? Henry Ford innovating generation vs. Bob Hope civic-minded generation? What am I, the Kurt Cobain cocaine generation? Give me a break. Dent practically salivates over his own worked-up extrapolations. Poorly written, with some of the most bizarre graphics I have ever seen, this book isn't worth the paper it's printed on. Save you 15 bucks for a couple of e-trades...
Rating: Summary: There is nothing wrong with optimism. Review: An interesting and believable prediction of the future. It's a lot better than the doom and gloom economist who are always predicting that things can't last. I believe that sometimes the economy is the world's best example of the self fulfilling prophesy. So if that's true, than I want to believe Mr. Dent.
Rating: Summary: ELIMINATE YOUR "STALLED" THINKING ABOUT DEMOGRAPHICS Review: Beginning with his outstanding book, THE GREAT BOOM AHEAD, Harry S. Dent has shown us how valuable demographics can be in selecting investments from stocks to retirement and second homes. As good as that book was, THE ROARING 2000s is a substantial improvement and should be read by one and all. Unlike economists who simple-mindedly extrapolate past economic trends, Dent builds from existing demographic trends (age and location of the population) to help you understand when and where key economic changes are likely to occur. While he may overdo this at times (like giving you detailed advice for 20 years from now -- attitudes may change affecting how age cohorts behave by then), this book is a breakthrough in making demographic analysis practical for the average executive or investor. IGNORE THESE LESSONS AT YOUR PERIL. Most of us suffer from a Disbelief Stall: If an idea is new to us, we often cannot believe that it will be helpful. Every company in America turned down the chance to buy Alexender Graham Bell's patents and technology and the telephone in the early part of the 20th century, because no one could imagine that the telephone would be ever more than a toy. Don't make that mistake aobut Mr. Dent's work on demographics. This is serious, valuable thinking that will only improve as Mr. Dent and others do more in this area. I have long used demographic analysis to improve results for my consulting clients. They usually have the Misconception Stall that economic cross-elasticities are all that need to be considered. Consider beverages: Few use baby formula when they are no longer babies. Ignore that fact and your forecast of baby formula consumption will be way off, as demographic and life style trends affect how many babies are born. Many towns, for example, sold off excess schools in the 1980s believing that they would shrink their schools forever. They did not consider that the Baby Boom generation would start having vast numbers of babies again beginning around 1986. Watch your taxes rise as a result of this "Stalled" thinking.
Rating: Summary: Must read for anyone interested in investing and the economy Review: I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the economic changes on our horizon. I won't go into all the reasons it is a great book since many of the reviews already discuss this. I want to simply point out one problem I have with it - in it Harry Dent basically seems to feel that the average Joe investor isn't savvy enough to invest directly in stocks. Rather, he suggests mutual funds. This, to my mind, is a big error. 80% of all mutual funds fail to match, let alone beat, the market average! Investing in stocks is not as hard as the "experts" communicate (they, of course, are invested in you thinking it's hard) and it is far more rewarding.
Rating: Summary: Best summary of how to apply demographics to your life Review: Peter Drucker has been teaching the importance of demographics to business people and investors for decades. In all this time, only Harry S. Dent, Jr. has created a practical look at the implications of demographics for each of us. In creating this book, he has moved well beyond his earlier work, and created information that each person must have. For a popular book, this is written in a way that makes it very accessible and easy to use. I highly recommend that you get this book, read it, and refer to the many wonderful summary graphs daily to remind you what questions to ask yourself about how demographics will affect your life, business, and investments. I look forward to reading future books from Mr. Dent.
Rating: Summary: Impressive data-backed presentation at Update 99 Review: Excellent book, and I just saw the author speak at Update 99. His presentation was compelling and backed by statistical evidence and comparisons. Investors and economists will do well to study and consider his data carefully.
Rating: Summary: common sense is not common, harry dent is right on the money Review: Predictable family spending habits-Harry Dents Roaring 2000s is right on the money. Demographics-ie. birth rates and the historical immigration in flows shows an enormous insight and wisdom to future spending habits, potential stock appreciations, industry growth, and the real estate cycle. A MUST READ...
Rating: Summary: This is a must read for both the amateur and pro investor Review: H.S. Dent builds a strong case for a boom market in the years to come. I highly recommend anyone who invests in the stock market to read this book. Dent gives a good summary of how the internet will shape American society and the world over the next 15-20 years. He backs it up with a strong analysis dating back to the 1400's, Gutenberg and the printing press. He not only gives us an idea of the path we're on, but how to build wealth along the way. If you're considering a home purchase in the next year, make sure you read the last two chapters of the book.
