Summary: A Big Disappointment
Review: Basic Electronics, 8th Edition, was a big dispointment. I used an earilier edition of Grob in high school. I hardly recognized the book that I received in the mail. Half of each page is given over to pictures that have little or nothing do with the text, and at more than $80 it is over priced. I would recommend "Practical Electronics of Inventors" by Scherz instead.

Summary: Basic Electronbics, Bernard Grob
Review: Being a retired engineer but still doing research work, found myself in need of refreshment courses. Bernard Grob's book is a magnificent work of printed text, in art, illustrations, composition, academic technology, and up to the state art in electronics. I cannot put it down for another day, it is so well written and beautiful in colored illustrations. It carries you all the way through to three phase generators, electronic devices, circuits, digital electronics, and integrated circuits.

Very clear and precise in instruction, you can't miss the point. The illustrations are a great aid to those with short span retention memories. A great book for college, and reference for those of us having to review late in life. Worth more than its present price.

Summary: the best for basic electroincs
Review: I am fairly new to electronics and wanted to get a book that would provide a solid learning foundation. After thumbing through a lot of books I settled on this one, which was ultimately an easy choice. Everything seems to be here that the beginner would need to develop an excellent understanding of the basics of electronics. The layout is in classic textbook form with plenty of illustrations, examples and problems to work. All of which combine nicely with the text to provide a very easy to understand format, more so then many other books on the topic I have seen (Electronics Fundamentals: Circuits, Devices, and Applications by Thomas L. Floyd, seems to be equally as well done, which was a close second in my choice for a beginner's book. It's also worth checking out). As a beginner, this book has done an excellant job of providing everything I wanted in a basic electronic book for newbies. This book is on the expensive side, but typical for a textbook. What this book gives in return is well worth the price of admission. I was definetly happy with the purchase and would buy it again if something where to happen to it.

Although I have not had a chance to see Grub's supplement books yet (Problems in Grob Basic Electronics, Experiments in Grob Basic Electronics, and Mathematics for Grob Basic Electronics), I am sure they would complement this book very well. Especially if this book is any indication of the quality of his companion material.

In closing, I can't recommend this book highly enough for the beginner.

Summary: good introduction to electronics
Review: I had this book for my sophomore year in EE major and was the first course in basic electronics. This book is really easy to read with plent of worked examples, diagrams and graphs. It starts from the very basic electronics concept such as diodes etc and move on to more advanced topics as filters and amplifiers later in the book.

Anyone looking for a solid start in electronics should read this book.

Summary: Great for the newbie
Review: I have just joined the N.E.D. University of Engineering and Technology, Electronics Eng. dept. (2002-2003 batch). I almost finished the book before the classes started.I just wanted to have a knowhow of what I'd be studying in the next 4 years (B.E.), and picked up the book after having a look at this very page.

I must say that this is a wonderful book. It is very easy to understand b/c it has very basic maths involved (which i knew, even when i was in 10th class). It explains quite a hell lot, and i've increased my knowledge very much. I'm sure I'll be a step ahead of my class mates all year long.

I has the best explanation of A.C. circuits, capacitors, inductors, time contants, Diodes, BJTs, FETs ..... which is helping me very much...

It comes highly recommeded, from me, for the complete newbie (although i skipped the first 7-8 chapters.... b/c i had some knowledge from my 12th Physics). MUST BUY

Summary: Great Book
Review: I own a very old edition (4th) that my dad had used a decade or so ago. I am a junior in high school and studying telecommunications in an ROP-type class, and when i flip through the book, it is very helpful, even though it is the fourth edition. I hope i can convince my parents to by the eighth edition for me for christmas.

Summary: The classic
Review: I used one of the original editions, or close to it (the one with the green cloth cover), 35 years ago in my high-school electronics and electricity class, and my edition might have been published in the 50's. This book is the latest edition of this now venerable classic, and it retains the clear and concise explanations of basic principles that the original was renowned for. Grob's book has taught thousands of radiomen, electronics technicians, and engineers over the last half century or more. It's practically an educational institution in and of itself. Truly a great classic in its field.
