Summary: Curriculum Improvement Decision Making and Process
Review: Curriculum Improvement Decision Making and Process Ninth Edition by Ronald C. Doll Published by Allyn and Bacon : Boston 1996

A Review by Ester Dupree

This book was very difficult to read due to the amount of information presented and method in which it was written. There was a lot of dull information found in the book and it took plenty of focus to grasp the most important areas. It was like a piece of meat that still had all the fat on it and once you trim the fat you realize that there is a piece of prime rib underneath. I did find some very helpful information within like the previous trends in curriculum. It gave me a better picture of how far we have come. The situations were realistic in that I could imagine one of them happening in my school and the activities made me think. If the author wants to further his audience and for that audience to keep this book as a reference, I suggest that he publish a more reader-friendly edition. He should keep the general format but in order for this book to work as a reference, the information should be of interest and easy to find. The author should condense this text and trim the non-important areas. He needs to present and keep the more relevant information.

Summary: An Easy-Reading Text
Review: The book Curriculum Improvement by Ronald C. Doll was one of the easiest reading textbooks I've had for a university course. Doll writes in an easy-going style that sounds as if he's explaining it to you in person. The opening chapter alone was worth the price of the book. It contained a condensed look at all of the philosophical schools of thought, including Idealists, Realists, Pragmatists, etc. Doll's book also describes the fundamentals involved with the curriculum development process. The chapters on curriculum change and improvement cover the attitudes involved, problems that emerge in the ongoing process, and who the participants in the process should be.

Review: I found this book rather wordy which made it difficult to quickly access specific information. However, it was sufficient for the course requirements. I do not plan to keep this book in my professional library.

Summary: Useful & Valuable Resource for Designing a Curriculum
Review: The required textbook, Curriculum Improvement: Decision Making and Process has been used as a reference for course readings and assignments. This textbook has been informative and helpful in leaning about and developing Bschool curriculums. This text was very beneficial in designing a curriculum with the various steps explained in much detail. While reading this textbook, I found myself selecting pertinent information that related to curriculum development. The book provided examples that were relevant and helpful. This textbook provides the reader with valuable information related to what a curriculum includes, how to design curriculums, and how to implement the curriculum material in the school environment.

Summary: A N EXCELLANT BOOK FOR TEACHERS
Review: tHIS BOOK HELPED ME WITH MY ASSIGNMENTS AND IN THE CLASSROOM.

Summary: A good reference
Review: Wow. This book was really tough for me to read. I had to break the reading
assignments into sessions in order to finish! Chapter 1 was a bit too long and
unneccessary for the history of curriculum. It is well founded that historical perspectives
are important to the ever-changing curriculum. However, I am not sure that a historical
timeline of events is really necessary. It seems common sense that schools will change
and adapt to society's needs at the given moment. I feel about the same way in
reference to the philosophy chapter. I did find Chapter 5 and 6 to be very useful to
explain how the curriculum design and evaluation processes actually occur. Chapters 7-9
were also informative, but very lengthy to make a point that required much less.

Summary: NOVA student - Eric
Review: The Curriculum Development book by Ronald C. Doll had much valuable information to offer. Some of the topics in it include Psychological Bases for Curriculum Decisions and the General Process of Curriculum Change. Reading this textbook can be a bit difficult due to lengthy, wordy chapters. Although I found some topics helpful in my own classroom setting, I probably will not keep this book in my personal library.
