Summary: Review for EDL 501
Review: This book was required for a graduate course through Nova University. I used this book along with the information from the instructor's weekly lectures to complete assignments. Curriculum Improvement Decision Making and Process provided a historical foundation that was enlightening to me. As a classroom teacher I talk about and use the word curriculum on a daily basis. However, a sense of meaning developed after having read some background on the struggles and the efforts people have undertaken throughout the years to make the necessary curriculum changes to improve the nation's schools and to enhance the learning process for our children.

Summary: Curriculum Planning by Roanld C. Doll
Review: Although the textbook is very technique in composition, it has a lot of relevant information for someone like myself beginning in the CIT program. It was very informative in that it provided lost so background information on specific topics. The author provided an abundance of examples and models to utilize when teaching various concepts. Textbook contained many points of views.

Textbook was subdivided in that it provided for background information--framework on curriculum design. It began with a historical and philosophical foundation (identifying areas of concern in your environment, well-known people in the curriculum field and history of the schol system with curriculum design. the curriculum material included How learners grow and develope--identifying students with deficit, Social and Cultural forces affecting curriculum design-technology, traditional challenges, diverse cultures, Subject Matter--disciplines organizing and adapting curriculum materials to reach all learners.

Part 2 of the textbook covered the processes needced to improve the curriculum. It had the teacher's point of view, the politicians, and whether or not the schols were being run as a business. Way sto evaluate students and the curriculum to be sure the curriculum is teaching the skills the sdtudnets need to be successful. It included allowing studdnts and parents to be rsource when adopting a curriculum. At the end, the author discussed somne of the leaders problems with devising a curriculum sutiable for everyone.

Summary: Curriculum Improvement Needs Improvement
Review: The textbook Curriculum Improvement. Decision Making Process by Ronald C. Doll (1996) is hard to read. I found many of the analogies used throughout the book improper and inappropriate. I had to read over paragraphs several times before I finally understood the point Mr. Doll was trying to make. This book is not appropriate for a 6-week graduate level course taken over the Internet. If this were used in a classroom setting, students would have opportunities to discuss the book with fellow classmates and the instructor. Mr. Doll does however, do a thorough job in examining the subject of curriculum improvement.

Summary: Curriculum development and change, a history and how-to
Review: Curriculum Improvement by Ronald C. Doll

I truly appreciated the thoroughness of this scholarly text, as well as the balanced,carefully-worded presentation of thoughts and history regarding curriculum development and improvement. The only negative aspect of this book is that I found the text difficult to read when I was tired because of its somewhat tedious attention to every single aspect of curriculum development and change. This is not really a negative because it is also part of what makes Doll's book an absolutely incredible resource. I found myself writing in the margins on at least every other page, which for me is a sign of interest or importance of the subject. The only thing I would change about this book would be to make the subject index more complete.
