Rating: Summary: Good Resource Review: As a curriculum coordinator for my school district I am always looking for useful resources to share with other educators. Mr. Doll's book is one I will now place near the top of my list. In his book he offers many research-based suggestions on how we can make sure the curriculum we offer meets the needs of an increasingly diverse population of students.
Rating: Summary: Designing Curriculum Review: As Doll so thoroughly addresses in his book, the design of curriculum is multifaceted. Doll presents the material in a very concise and easy to read and understand format. The teacher, principal, and director of curriculum and instruction will find it a useful tool as a guide to designing or redesigning curriculum at any level. The sole purpose of any school---to improve student learning---can be achieved through the use of Doll's book as a guide to improve curriculum.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Resource Review: It is a very informative resource. I feel the book was extremely organized. Although the chapters are lengthy, it provides a well planned and thought process for all curriculum concerns. I specifically like the chapter which covers objectives in the curriculum. This chapter provides specific details of all types of objectives and correlates with the thematic unit.
Rating: Summary: Curriculum Review Review: The book by Doll covered several aspects of curriculum. I was impressed with the information of historical issues that have attributed to the direction of school curriculum. This book allowed me to reflect on the curriculum, which affects my school today. This book also outlined information that will allow me to continue its use for reference on curriculum topics.
Rating: Summary: Undergrad Aimed Review: The book seemed like it was aimed toward an undergrad curriculum student. It is well written, however it can get quite ordinary at times.
Rating: Summary: Improving Doll's Curriculum Review: I thought that this text was very informative of the many issues taking place in education. It really opened ones eyes to the fact that there is so much more to being a teacher than simply doing addition facts or science experiments, that there are many "behind the scenes" issues to be dealt with. Perhaps there should be less examples of situations and narrower areas of explanation. Each topic WAS informative and definitely relevant to the trends of education occurring today, however I do think that the headings and subheading could have been narrowed down further to eliminate certain areas covered.
Rating: Summary: Review of Curriculum Improvement Review: Doll presents the information in a way that helps the reader understand and become familiar with how important matters of curriculum are to the management and cohesive structure of a school. The text is not repetitious or boring. In the writers experience, most text books are dry, repetitous, and require multiple read throughs in order to establish a good understanding of what is being read. Doll combines knowledge and examples to help the reader understand how a great curriculum can enhance the quality of education, administrators, and students in a school.
Rating: Summary: Curriculum Improvement Review: Since my prior knowledge of curriculum had been incredibly limited before starting a course on curriculum design, I feel the textbook Curriculum Improvement-Decision Making and Process, by Ronald Doll, offers the tools and techniques necessary to evaluate and design a curriculum. The information presented in the text is thorough and straight forward, with many examples and activities to reinforce the various concepts highlighted in each chapter. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in cultivating and further developing one's knowledge of curriculum and factors related to it.
Rating: Summary: The Foundation for Instruction Review: In the dedication to Ronald Doll's book, he acknowledges his wife's influence in his writing career. I think his belief that she influenced his successful efforts provides a parallel between curriculum and education. A strong curriculum is to a school as a supportive spouse is to a writer, it is the foundation upon which learning occurs. A weak, narrowly defined, poorly implemented curriculum will not support the educational framework built upon it. His book detailing the historical, philosophical, psychological, social and cultural influences on curriculum helps us understand current issues facing educator, and after providing this background he walks us through the process of improving education. I think his book provides a guide for students interested in improving education.
Rating: Summary: Review for Doll text Review: Critique of booksI utilized both books thoroughly during this course. I feel that the book written by Roberts & Kellough regarding the thematic unit was a fabulous tool to use when I began to research and develop my unit. I was able to use different approaches and to get great ideas while planning my assignment. The text was easy to read and understand and the examples were detailed enough to give me a good start into implementation. I will definitely utilize this book often during my teaching profession, and I will refer to it to help me when planning curriculum in my school site as an administrator. The book authored by Doll gave good insight to the history of curriculum. It encompassed how curriculum and instruction has progressed through the years to what we utilize today in our educational system in America. Using many different perspectives and theories, it gave me a better understanding of where we came from and where we want to go in education. As an administrator, I must be able to set a vision for my school and curriculum and instruction play a major part in this as I try to motivate my school to carry out that vision. It is an ever changing duty full of challenges and difficulties, that I will try hard to meet daily both as a teacher and also as a future leader.
