Review: "CURRICULUM IMPROVEMENT" BY RONALD C. DOLL

The textbook, "Curriculum Improvement" is an outstanding text for use in the understanding of curriculum and school improvement. The historical foundation it lays is important for all students of education to understand. As historical data is reviewed, the text shows that trends tend to repeat themselves and reinforces the reform models now being implemented in schools throughout the world. The emphasis on the cultural and social implications for education and curriculum comes from a contemporary viewpoint, thereby focusing the reader on the challenges of today's schools. The reorganization and improvement of curriculum, varied approaches to selection of content, including the validation of societal philosophies and their roles, and the curriculum planning process are all aspects of "Curriculum Improvement". This textbook is recommended for all students and leaders in the educational arena. It is of the utmost importance that school leaders including administrators, faculty, department chairpersons, etc. read this book and be able to understand the reasons for the process of choosing and aligning curriculum in the classroom of today.

Review: Curriculum and Improvement Decision Making and Process Ronald C. Cobb

I found this book to be very useful. While in my Master's program, I used this book extensively. It breaks the curriculum process into small units of information that anyone in the education field can relate with. This book takes each individual aspect of designing curriculums and explains how to create or improve an existing one. Also, this text provided numerous activities that aid the teacher or designer. I had limited knowledge of designing curriculums before I used this book. After using and applying the concepts from this book, I have found that I understand the process of designing a curriculum as well as implementing improvements on an existing one.

Those individuals who are in the education field would find this book invaluable. Whether you are a teacher or an administrator, this book will give you the proper guidelines to designing and improving curriculums.

Review: Curriculum Improvement by Ronald C. Doll was a well-written textbook in that it was easy enough to understand and was applicable to my course and its assignments. It was a bit dry at times, but it didn't put me to sleep either. Included in the text was the following material: Historical & Philosophical Foundations of Curriculum Decision Making; Psychological Bases for Curriculum Decisions; Social & Cultural Forces Affecting Curriculum Decisions; Subject Matter & its Role in Decision Making; Making Decisions about the Design of Curriculum; Evaluation of Curriculum Programs & Projects; Process in Curriculum Improvement; The Planning Process; Participants & their Roles in Curriculum; the Problem of Communication; and Curriculum Leadership. If these are the topics that you're looking for...than this is the textbook for you!!!

Review: Doll, Ronald C. (1996). Curriculum Improvement (9th ed.). Needham Heights, MA: Allyn & Bacon.

Curriculum Improvement by Ronald C. Doll is a valuable resource to any staff member who is involved in improving the curriculum. Through easy to read English, many examples, and a great amount of detail, Doll explains what has historically occurred in curriculum decision making, how to attend to individual differences, what social and cultural forces affect curriculum decision making, the criteria in selecting subject matter for curriculum improvement, steps to be taken in designing a curriculum, and the importance of evaluating programs. Doll states that there can be no improvement in the curriculum without a change in the people who design the curriculum; therefore, he explains actions that curriculum leaders should take and the steps that they would follow in plotting, starting, and continuing the planning process. He discusses the roles of everyone involved in curriculum improvement. This book contains an abundant source of information and is highly recommended for anyone who wants to understand what curriculum is, the need for constantly improving it, and the process involved in curriculum improvement.

Review: This textbook was easy to read and the issues that were discussed were relative and interesing to the reader. Doll discussed issues that are very important to an educator's environment, especially to a core curriculum teacher. I plan to keep this textbook for future references regarding curriculum improvements because my school district is under new management and reconstruction on major educational policies.

Review: The text by Ronald C. Doll provides current and informative chapters relating to curriculum improvement, decisions, and design. As a graduate student, Doll's direct approach to writing has helped me ascertain the important role of the curriculum process.

His work discusses the changing role of social and cultural values that are affected in our nation's schools. His realistic approach to discussion sparks valid and debatable discourse.

Review: Evaluation Textbooks

The Curriculum Improvement: Decision Making and Process (9th ed.) by Ronald C. Doll clearly outlines each step in establishing a successful curriculum. From this textbook, I have gained the importance of teacher playing an active role in making curriculum decisions for their schools. By reading and using this textbook, I feel more prepared in voicing my opinion about our schools current curriculum. I had the opportunity to work as a curriculum leader for my school while taking this class. I used the information that was provided in the book to guide me in making the appropriate decisions mainly for our school and the students. The only negative aspect of the textbook is that each chapter is extremely long. Since we all have busy lives, I would suggest each chapter to be broken up so that the reader stays interested longer and does not become overwhelmed with the length of the chapters.
