Rating: Summary: The Substitute Teacher Handbook is a comprehensive resourse! Review: Are you looking for effective skills to manage student behavior? Do you want some advice on how to teach from sketchy lesson plans? Could you use an easy to complete form that can be left as a report for the permanent teacher? Do you worry about having empty class time and scrambling to find something for students to do? If so, this book is for you!Born out of a need and developed at Utah State University, the Substitute Teacher Handbook is a comprehensive resource for both the new and experienced substitute teacher. The handbook covers everything from teaching a subject you know nothing about, to emergency situations and going on field trips. What started out in its first edition as a 116 page guide is now an all inclusive resource that addresses being a professional educator, behavior management skills, special education, teaching methods, and much more, with over 120 pages of fill-in activities alone. Although originally written for individual substitute teacher use, thousands of copies of this handbook have been purchased by school districts nationwide to use as a textbook for substitute teacher training programs. Having taught some of these courses myself, I am always excited to hand out the books and let participants begin exploring the content. Their enthusiasm and appreciation for all of the practical information and easy to teach student activities make my job worthwhile. P.S. If you teach primarily in the middle and high school grades, I would also recommend the companion book for grades 9-12. Much of the background information and many of the skills/strategies are the same, but the student activities are more challenging and cover a broader range of topics including music, history, geography, and foreign language.
Rating: Summary: Best resource available for substitute teachers Review: As a newly-credentialed substitute teacher with no classroom experience, I'm thrilled to have found the Substitute Teacher Handbook. I've looked at a number of other books on the subject, but find this to be the most complete resource. It is easy to read, thorough, well-organized, and full of useful examples and checklists. Half the book is dedicated to activities and lessons, grouped by grade, subject, and type (5-minute fillers, early finishers, & short activities). The other half includes behavior management, legal aspects, advice from school nurses, and other valuable information. I now know how to have a smooth, productive day, how to handle virtually any situation, and how to avoid bad habits that experienced subs find hard to break. I highly recommend this book to all new subs, and believe that experienced subs would benefit, as well.

Rating: Summary: Lifesaver Review: I have helped do some substituting in the local schools since 1998 and no other book is as comprehensive as this one for training substitutes. I've been to two different workshops on how to substitute, and each one highly recommended this book over ALL OTHERS!! What it contains: --How to be prepared for each day --What to bring in your "bag of tricks" (every sub should have one to survive). --How to act professional --Classroom management (keeping it under control) --Emergency procedures --First Aid --Legal Aspects --Disabilities and Special Ed --Giften and Talented --Multiculturalism --Brainstorming --KWL --Questions for Higher level Thinking --Using Audoi-Visual materials Effectively --FILL-IN ACTIVITIES--for when you need to fill in some spare time! --Also independent activities for those who finish their assignments early. You get the idea--this book HAS IT ALL. --George Stancliffe
