Summary: Great!! A new form of age old advice!
Review: Rick Pitino tells readers the basics behind successful teams, businesses, and people. It's a new way to say what we have heard before, mixed with testimonials from people that know Rick on a personal level.

If you're not into sports however, you may find some of his anologies hard to follow, but it's still worth your time and effort to read.

Summary: Pitino is one focused mo-fo.....
Review: There are few individuals on the planet that have as much fire and focus as Rick. When I heard he had a book out of this content, I had to get it, and was very glad I did. This guy really understands how to treat people, and get the most out of them. This book is great for anyone, especially for basketball fans. I enjoyed the constant examples he gave to back his points, such as his dealings with Marc Jackson. The only thing I had a bit of a hard time with was some of the testamonials. I mean, they were okay, but it seemed like he was trying to say: "See everybody? I am a great guy! This is proof you should listen to me!" Plus, some of the people he got to give such testamonials were truly no-namers that such a high profile "been around" guy like Rick, well, he should have gotten people to speak up that would have actually made us say "wow! that IS impressive, John Thompson (or whoever) said that?" Any moment I was expecting to see a testamonial signed by "the janitor at BU that knew the 12th man's little brother from junior high school." Other than that, GREAT book! Rick can also teach a few lessons on how to overcome adversity; something most of us (including myself) really need to work on.

Summary: Worthless - and I'm a Celtics fan!
Review: This is one of the worst books I've ever read. His advice is so obvious it's pathetic (Get all your unpleasant phone calls over first thing - No Duh, Rick!). The most irritating thing about it, however, was the inclusion of the testimonials from former players, fellow coaches, etc. about how wonderful a guy Rick is and what a great motivator he is. If he's that great, he shouldn't need all this self-reinforcement. Don't waste your time!

Summary: Lessons from a master motivator
Review: Years ago, channel surfing in Providence, RI, I came across a TV show hosted by then-unknown Providence College basketball coach Rick Pitino. Expecting to hear a half hour of coach-speak about winning the next game, I instead saw one of the most intelligent, detailed analyses of basketball strengths and weaknesses that I ever heard in my life. Thinking that anyone this prepared and disciplined could succeed at nearly anything, it was no surprise when he guided a previously obscure team to the Final Four that year.

In Success Is A Choice, Pitino again succeeds in transcending the standard eat-your-vegetables advice about working hard and succeeding. His ten steps to success are all things you've heard before, but are coupled with the same intelligent analysis and passion that helped Pitino grab his own personal brass rings. His anecdotes from life on the basketball court translate well to the shop floor or the boardroom, and show a depth of understanding human motivation that goes far beyond slogans. This is a guide that will make you hungry to get started doing the hard work it takes to succeed. -- Rich Gallagher, author of Smile Training Isn't Enough.

Summary: The best "success steps" book i've ever read!
Review: Well, to start off with, I couldn't put the book down. It gave me a new outlook on my goals and what steps I need to focus on the most. I've read a lot of motivational books, and this by far has had the most effect on my life. I enjoyed his no nonsense approach, and to tell you the truth, i had a difficult time deciding to buy it because i have no interest in basketball. But i looked past that and took a chance: Best thing I ever did for myself!!!!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Gives you the chance to make the choices without preeching.
Review: I am an 18 year old high school senior preparing to graduate and go to college. The idea of the "I'm okay, your okay" self help book disgusts me, and that fact made me skeptical to read the book at first. But the attitude presented by Pitino is like no other that I have ever seen. He places a heavy value on being positive and making attainable goals. Pitino makes everybody feel like they are important and will succeed. He never bad mouths or makes you think negatively. Even if you have never followed basketball, this book will help you in ways you may have never thought possible.

Summary: Good but redundant
Review: I read this book about 6 months ago and saw it again here on Amazon. I will give credit to Pitino for giving some no-nonsense good advice and some very interesting anecdotes, but he says them over and over again without really getting into much detail. In a couple chapters I found the EXACT same paragraph written twice. It looked like he had cut & pasted from a previous chapter. He also gives little detail about what he says. For example, he says we need to learn how to get in "the zone" (a term used by basketball players which refers to when an average player plays like an All-American without any effort) more often. NO KIDDING RICK! Players have tried a million different ways to get into the zone. It's not that simple. If you want a self help program, get Anthony Robbins' Personal Power II. It's second to none.

Summary: Pitino wins again
Review: I have copied Coach Pitino's 10 Steps for Success for my office wall so I can read it everyday. His plan works. He believes in long term success based on hard work, a great attitude, good habits, and persistence. I recommend that you take action and buy and read this book.

Summary: Excellent success outline for teenagers thru adults!!!
Review: Pitino is directly opposed to today's "fast food/instant rewards/something for nothing" society. Hearing his validation of the fundamentals of: work ethic, dicipline, positive role model templates, persistence, today's youth will be driven to embrace the "old school" values. Invest in your kid's future! Give it to him/her and write a personal note inside. Highlight it before you give it to him/her if you have to. Make it a loving gift, not a lecture....enjoy! Summary: You want it, you got it!
Review: Mr. Pitino's book has been my source of inner strength. I missed out on a promotion, my backlog of cases was seemingly insurmountable, and I tried to tread the waters of despair alone. The going was rough as expected until I purchased Success is a Choice (after going back to the bookstore four times to make sure the investment was worth it.) I purchased a book containing an enormous amount of priceless information that I use in my every day life. I especially refer to it for my avocation which is coaching club and high school volleyball. Mr. Pitino makes it simple and clear...Success is a Choice....and as I say....you want it, you got it
