Summary: Dangerous Error
Review: My husband recently bought "30 Days to a More Powerful Vocabulary" and I casually opened it to a page at random. On p. 287, there is a "test" with a question which reads: Is a lecherous man a misogynist? True or false. Shockingly, the answer, in the book, is false. What a sad commentary on the author, the editors and all the "positive" reviewers that they think that a man given to excessive self-indulgence with women "loves" them when such obsessive behavior is antithetical to true love, in which the well-being of the loved person is paramount. Of course, lechery is a close cousin to physical abuse. And, that's the danger in this vocabulary error.

Summary: A great vocabulary builder up to early college level
Review: Norman Lewis teaches essential words in this excellent guide to building one's vocabulary. He also points out word roots to further enhance the reader's understanding of new terms. High school graduates and 1st year college students should know most of the words in this book. If such students don't, then Word Power Made Easy is an excellent supplement for them.

Summary: cut a swath through that sesquipedalian verbiage!
Review: The language of literature is a language apart, in that the vocabulary range of the average literary excursion, classic or contemporary, far exceeds the vocabulary of the everyday spoken language. And the contents of the average dictionary eclipses the spoken vocabulary in powers of the nth degree. With so much to learn, how can one comprehend and retain all the linguistic wealth at one's disposal? Not a boring, droning recitation, this is a fun book that turns learning into a game - a readable, memorable look at the origins of words, and how their etymology explains, enriches, enhances, and enforces their definitions. A great vocabulary builder for anyone who loves language, reading, and learning!

Summary: REQUIRED READING IN MY SENIOR ENGLISH CLASS IN 1954!
Review: The methods Norman Lewis uses to teach vocabulary are fun, refreshing, and LASTING! As a senior in high school, I found this book every bit as interesting as one might expect from a novel. To this day, I remember the chapter on the various medical practitioners. But even more amazing, when I see them in print, I can, to this day, remember whether I learned them from WORD POWER MADE EASY. The most helpful hints for me were the foreign language roots. Learning those helped me uncover the meaning of other words based on those roots. Also Lewis' little vignettes for each word are memorable. My favorite, even now, is the one describing a 'phrenologist'. Try it! You'll love it!

Summary: Extremely Effective and Superior for Building Vocubulary
Review: This book is not only very effective for building a strong vocabulary, but it also teaches the reader the etymology of words, their usages, and how a person can determine the meaning/usage of a new word just by examining the word itself. This book was given to me by my ninth grade English teacher many, many years ago. I wore the copy he gave me out and had to buy a new one. It has been an invaluable tool for me not only when I write but in conversation as well. Norman Lewis will teach you how to know if you are using corrects words in your sentences, how to pronounce and spell words correctly, and how to speak with grammatical accuracy. This is a book that you will refer to for many years to come. Furthermore, it is a book that is actually a fun tool from which to learn. To give you an idea of the contents in the book, it consists of a section that tests your current vocabulary to see where you are right now, another section deals with building a vocabulary database, there is a section that deals with how to talk about personality types, actions, Doctors, various practitioners, science and scientists, liars and lying, actions, and various speech habits, etc. Each section is vital to your overall vocabulary strength (even though this does not seem to be the case). Every chapter/section has exercises that force you to put into practice what you have been learning (this is a must). Thus, overall this is a very effective vocabulary builder (as the front cover totes).

Summary: The book to move head-and-shoulders above the competition.
Review: THIS BOOK IS THE BEST POSSIBLE REINFORCEMENT OF THE VENERABLE DEAN OF ALL WORD MASTERY BOOKS: "30 DAYS TO A MORE POWERFUL VOCABULARY" that Norman Lewis co-authored with Dr. Wilfred S. Funk. And therein lies its power. "30 Days ..." puts you above average, well into college level. But why settle for an average good college when you can with a few more weeks' effort get into some of the very best? Once you have finished "30 Days ...", you will fly through some chapters like a professor of English. It is much better to reinforce what you have mastered with "Word Power Made Easy" than to reread "30 Days ..." It will give you painless reinforcement rather than tedious repetition and it will "clinch" what you already know. Move up from just being above average to flourishing in the top 10%. Unequivocally touted by John Thor Newlander, Teacher of Communication Arts and English. 3/5/99

Summary: Should be required reading for all schools
Review: This book was required reading for a college course I took in 1976. How I wish I had read it during High School, it certainly would have helped me in life and in the SAT's. It is so much easier to learn word roots the way Lewis teaches, than memorizing words, that way you will always know the words. My son is now in 6th grade and is studying Greece. In conjunction, his English teacher had the class learn the Greek roots. I found my old copy of Word Power, which really impressed upon my son how beneficial learning vocab this way is. I am delighted that the book is still in print and have purchased my son his own copy.
