Summary: Good Reading!
Review: A good read for anyone who has seriously considered chucking it all and escaping to a sanctuary somewhere. But why tout New Zealand? Granted that it is unmatched for scenic beauty and admirable privacy laws but economically it just doesn't make sense. Its income tax rate is 33 percent (soon to be 39 percent if Labour takes over next year) plus it has a 12.125 percent GST (which translates into an 11 1/9 percent added income tax). So as of next year your tax liability will hover around 50 percent! Factor in Purchasing Power Parity at around 0.60 and it turns out that you are left with 30 cents spending power for every dollar you generate. Even Canada does better than that!

Summary: A foundation
Review: As I read this book, as I do with all informative books, I kept in mind that this is not all inclusive piece of work or a fail-safe means of doing it. So you might ask what it is, well it is a basis for you to start planning. If you plan on doing what the author discuses and don't do more research than just his book then you missed the point of it. Read it, think, read another, think, plan, review, then act. The only axiom that he missed is, "Plan twice, act once."

Summary: I Can Still Find You
Review: Being a retired Special Force officer (Green Beret for all you non-military folks) and a current law enforcement officer who is a graduate of the FBI Academy -- yes, I'm one of those guys -- I read Hide...Disappear with great interest. Believe it folks! There's a lot of information hidden in those pages. But it still won't help you if somebody like me is after you. It doesn't reveal in depth the many techniques to 'dropping out' which are also used by intelligence officers, both criminal and military. However, the overview is right on target; which is why you won't succeed. People have a mouth and like to talk, and they also have a 'signature' (Pankau, if he reads this will know I'm for real). So unless you become a monk and take a vow of silence, it will all come to naught. Still, it was a good read and reminded me of some of my old haunts and the cross border ops I used to do .... To all the other readers -- I will tease you with the fact that there is a perfect means for travel surreptitiously between countries which is mentioned by the author in passing and which can aid in 'dropping out.' But, unless you've ever done it, you won't think of it. Anyway, taxes are a small price to pay for the freedoms we enjoy .......

Summary: The title promises a lot, but the book doesn't deliver.
Review: Beware of catchy titles. This book covers the topic in a very superficial way. There's really very little new information here that hasn't already been covered by other authors. The title is catchy, and the promotional material sounds enticing, but the book simply doesn't deliver very useful information. If you have already read other books and articles on this subject, you should save your money and and reading time by not purchasing this book. If you know nothing about this topic, then it's a place to start. However, don't expect any eye-popping solutions or revelations.

Summary: Mostly a waste
Review: I bought this book at the discount counter on a whim -- it sounded like a fun read. I read it cover to cover, and ended up doing something I've never done before: I threw it in the trash.

To be fair, there were some things about the book I enjoyed. It pointed out how much of our personal information is available across so many databases, and how we leave distinctive trails of ourselves in so many ways.

The book could have been a lot of fun for the average person to read, and it could have been concretely instructive for the serious escapist. But its treatment of the main subject was too light and non-specific to serve as a real "how-to" checklist. As for the "fun" factor, the author comes across as a macho boor, with a cliche' attitude towards the government, women, and others that he considers "stupid jerks." Any modern woman would label him as an M.C.P. I felt like I was reading the work of a 1950s throwback, a Mickey Spillane wannabe.

The worst thing to me was the lack of proofreading. I'd guess there was an average of one grammatical or typographical error per page, and I really don't think I'm exaggerating. The guy really needs to hire an editor before he publishes another word.

In summary, the book is poorly written, it isn't very interesting, and it has no redeeming literary or social value. Into the trash it goes.

Summary: Fun to read but refs are out of date
Review: I can't add a lot more to the reviews that said this is a fun book to read but not high on detail. Try searching for any of the books he mentions and you find they are out of print or non existant (like the Scope publications don't show up nor do the passport books). I like the way the book described the various countries and the good and bad, but it was hard to read as it seemed addressed to both a criminal in trouble and someone just wanting to disconnect. I had to remove the cover so people would not stare.

Summary: Now you see me and now you..uh..see me
Review: I did not find publishing a book in one of the "how to disappear" schemes but a few dollars did vanish into somebody else's bank account when I purchased this propitious tome.
