Summary: Professors:Don't buy this book for your econ classes!
Review: I'm a collage history major and I'd just like to say that this is one of the worst textbooks I've ever tried to use. I've had to use it in both Economics 1 and Econ 11 and it's almost impossible to read. I don't know why my Econ professors insist on using it, it's so confusing and complicated that nobody in any of my classes are able to learn anything from it. It's written in a way that only people who already know a lot about economics can understand. My mother is a high school mathematics teacher and yet she couldn't figure out what in the world they were talking about most of the time! Teaching materials shouldn't be wrote in such a complicated manner that you can't actually TEACH from them. My advice to econ professors who are looking for a book for the class is to listen to the students for once and don't pick this one.

Summary: Absolutely Gorgeous and Common Sense
Review: This book does not need any advertizing because it's a mainstream economics textbook anyway. Anyway, I just wanted to share my experience with those who have a serious interest in economics and come from other fields. First, this book is packed with factual and illustrative material and will take time to complete. For this reason, it does not read as fast as other textbooks or popular books on economics, or simply speaking this book contains much less water and more content than other textbooks, so be patient. If you want to move faster, you can read only titles and summaries, it will still make sense.

Second, it presents the most comprehensive and up-to-date mainstream macro- and microeconomics, as well as a discussion of alternative and extreme theories. This book presents the most level-headed, non-partisan, and moderate approach to economics and policy. These views have become maintstream for a number of good reasons, not the least of which is successful practical application. In other words, what you get from this book is scientific facts, which were established through centuries of observation, experimentation and peer-review, as opposed to ideology. The difference between science and ideology is that the former strives to establish laws and principles (or generalizations) about natural phenomena that always work, and provide the most accurate description of reality no matter what it is or whether you like it or not. The latter picks and chooses facts (or simply doctors them) that support some presupposed view and igores the facts that refute it.

To make a long story short, if you want science and common sense and are prepared to invest time and effort to learn economics, this book is for you. Being a biologist and not a native English speaker, nevertheless I enjoyed this book enormously and highly recommend it.
