Rating: Summary: Very bad Review: A book with few applied examples and full of symbols and hard exercises is not a good book. This book is the worst mathematical book I ever read.
Rating: Summary: Many examples, few statements of clear theory Review: Althought the book contains number of very ineresting examples I would have prefered if Ross stated the underlying theory more clearly. Often, I had hard time finding the theory in the text. On the other hand, for practical purposes, if you can find the example that matches your practical problem this book will have the some form of the solution derived for it.
Rating: Summary: Stochastic Study Review: An extremely good basic section covering stocastic theory. There are also many good examples in this text that are fully worked out. Overall, this is an excellent text well worth having in your collection.
Rating: Summary: Great book! Review: Contains many good worked examples. The text is well written. Some of the introductory material is covered very lightly (for example Moment Generating Functions), but I believe Ross does a better job than others. Other topics, such as Poisson processes and Markov chains are covered in depth.
Rating: Summary: Excelent introductory text to probability Review: Either as a companion for a measure theoretical probability book, or as a textbook itself for applied probability, this book will help the reader to apply stochastic models in different contexts. It has plenty of examples, and works out details, which allows to gradually increase difficulty. A great company to Ross's Stochastic Processes.
Rating: Summary: better for introduction to stochastic Review: Especially for the students of industrial engineering may use this book after taking a course about probability. It is an introduction to stochastic processing book and really good for the subjects of Markov Chains and Poisson Process. There is a small part in the book about stochastic modelling and simulation. Be careful that the proofs are not very well and the questions are a bit easy but time consuming. Beside those, do not forget: this is not an introduction to probability but probability models; where some probability knowledge is needed.
Rating: Summary: Book leaves out way too much detail Review: I just paid [dollar amount] and it took 4 hours to get through 30 pages! I am no math slouch, but my probability skills are pretty weak. And Ross has one paragraph of explanation to 5 pages of examples and laborious proofs. As mentioned above, I suggest a supplement or simply another book. Filler/Chang are excellent together. Ross may be good for additional material especially for stochastic processes and simulation. But its definately not an "introduction".
Rating: Summary: Not for the novice Review: If you like to learn concepts through pure math without clear examples of how to apply the applications, then this is the book for you. Absolutely dreadful!
Rating: Summary: This book is great but required some background Review: Some readers found this book hard to read. This is due to the misleading title, i.e., the word 'introductory'. This book is great only if the readers are prepared. It is suggested to read an introductory book like "A First Course in Probability" by the same author or similar kind.

This book will be great only if the readers have basic concepts of probability.
