Rating: Summary: Excellent material, comprehensive writing Review: I used this book during my two Calculus courses at college. Usually not studying at home during the whole semester meant that I had to sit down and study half the book 2 days before each final exam. I found that to be quite easy a task with this book. Anton has written a high-density volume, that nevertheless does not bring a student (or anyone else, for that matter) to his knees trying to figure out all this math. Every chapter is clear and comprehensive, and the examples are very well set, giving the reader a sense of understanding every single line. The unsolved exercises at the end of each chapter are gradually increasing in difficulty, giving the solver a solid grounding on the material covered in the chapter. Overall, one of the best college books I have ever used, not implying that it could not be used by anyone interested in calculus simply for delving deeply into its wonderful realms.
Rating: Summary: Excellent book Review: I'm learning Calculus with this book and I'm finding excellent! My college changed Swokowski's book (it's out of print in Brazil!!!) by Anton's book. This book -together with Swokowski- is highly recommended for the beginners undergraduates. For me, Anton is very better Stewart's book -for instance-. Therefore, buy "Calculus a new horizont, 6th edition!
Rating: Summary: A New Horizon Indeed. Review: If you are a serious student of Calculus, go get Anton's Calculus. I am a Math teacher in Malaysia and a long time user of Anton's Calculus since his 3rd edition. I teach Calculus the traditonal way because in my country we are still new to the computers. Prof Anton has written books in his previous editions in a lively and refreshing manner that I could read his book again and again without getting bored. I may be old-fashioned, but as a fan of Anton, reading his latest 6th editions is such a delight, and only recently I have just learned how to make use of software like Maple, I could see Anton's Calculus paving my way into new explorations, as his new book says, Calculus: A New Horizon indeed. Buy Anton's Calculus, I am sure you will not regret.
Rating: Summary: Yay for Calculo! Review: It was exciting. I can't believe how excited I was to practice Calculus once I opened this book. How amazing! Logarithmic and exponential functions! Analysis of funcations and their graphs. Intregration, oh integration! I like Calculus.
Rating: Summary: An actual STUDENT's perspective... Review: Let me begin by saying that I took the calculus series as a self study course and did not have the benefit of a professor who taught the material, THEN used the book for assignment and reference purposes only. Most of the reviews so far seem to be written by professors who can't remember a time when they didn't know calculus, or students who know the material but are looking for a refresher. It may be a beautiful book if you fit into this category and know the material, but if you're trying to learn it the first time around, you're going to need to invest in an entire arsenal of other books to explain what is going on in this one. As a required text for the calculus course, I ended up shelling out a painful 160 big ones ($) for the text and solutions manual. The examples are overly simplistic and do not relate well to the bulk of the (even numbered) assigned problems where the student is left to his/her own luck in "discovering" the process of doing calculus. The difference in difficulty level between the odd and even problems is often staggering. Since the even problems do not have answers, they usually end up as the bulk of the assignment you are asked to turn in. If all you saw were the odd numbered problems, this would APPEAR to be a decent book. But there is little comparison or explanation for many of the even numbered exercises. The solutions manual, again, is overly simplistic, assuming that a student only needs to see something done once, rather than repeated over several sub chapters. The important fine details are often left quite obscure when they should be drilled in. A mathematician might enjoy the challenge of discovery with this book, but to me, as an engineer, math is ONLY a means to an end. I understand it's importance, but I take no joy in it. If you have a wonderful professor, you'll be fine. If you have some ogre who just shows up to drink some coffee, or you're attempting to instruct yourself, you're better off with something like "Calculus with Analytic Geometry" by Robert Ellis and Denny Gulick. Calculus is difficult to learn on your own, but it's a tolerable task with the Ellis/Gulick texts. I have a nice place on my bookshelf for those. I could not return the Anton set to the University since they decided to change books. I was initially very upset, but was soon quite happy to see that it made wonderful (though expensive) kindling as I burned off multiple brush piles across my property. I just couldn't bring myself to use it at the outhouse... A pine cone used the wrong direction would be less irritating.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful Book Review: O my God. I have never admired a math book soo much.(except my pre-cal) I am serious. It is SOO easy to undersand...No mumbo-jumbo language. Plain Simple ENGLISH.. I took it for Cal. one and Two. I had taken to take cal one during 5 week intense course. Screwed up big time. I partially blamed swokoskski cal. one book (sp?), and partially my teacher.. ofcourse I don't wanna blame myself =).. LoL.. Nevertheless.. This book was light at end of the tunnel.
Rating: Summary: You can teach yourself with this book. Review: Our school used this book for calc 3 and I'm very happy with the selection. Our teacher taught the theory part of the material. He rarely taught how to do the work (he relied on the book to do that and it was very understandable and taught well). The teacher's theory helped to get the material to our long term memories so hopefully your teachers' are using the same method. So if you need a book to show you how to work through the problems of Calc 3, buy this one, it'll do the job.
Rating: Summary: Scary stuff Review: The book is unbelievable cra..., it's hard to tell because the stuff that the author put is very super unbelievable cra... I belive the author doesn't know the advanced stuff or might be he just like to play with the beginner stuff. Don't ever buy this book for your reference, future,or what ever that you need. This book is not bible for mathematician, science and engineering student. But this book is a holy bible for donald duck, pluto, and their friends. I suggest if you want learn calculus well, I really highly recommend spivak, apostol,or richard courant. There is no dictionary that you can be a mathematician by using this book, unless you want be a "greatest" mathematician.
Rating: Summary: combine calculus a new horizon Review: THE GREATEST WEAKNESS STUDENTS BRING TO CALCULUS IS A POOR FOUNDATION IN ALGEBRA - ESPECIALLY THE STANDARD TOPICS OF PRECALCULUS. ANTON APPARENTLY AGREES BECAUSE THE PRECALCULUS REVIEW IN THE BACK OF THE BOOK AND THE SPRINKLINGS OF PRECALCULUS THROUGHOUT THE TEXT, WHICH SERVE AS A REVIEW AND INTRODUCTION TO CALCULUS TOPICS, ARE GREAT. TRULY, THIS CALCULUS TEXT CONTAINS A PRECALCULUS SUBTEXT THAT IS BETTER THAN A STANDARD PRECALCULUS COURSE. AS FOR THE CALCULUS, BRAVO, BRAVO, BRAVO. THIS IS THE BEST TEXT I HAVE EVER SEEN. THERE IS ANTON AND ALL OTHERS.
Rating: Summary: Great, but not the best Review: This book clearly explains all the details of basic calculus, and I found the end-of-chapter applications section very helpful in understand what calculus can do. The only downside is: not enough differencial equations. The book only teaches about separable and linear equations, but nothing is said about second degree differential equations. Also, I personnaly think the pre-calculus material at the back should also include an introduction to complex numbers. I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in calculus, as it is very easy to understand and the exercises are brilliant.
