Summary: Not Indicative of the Test
Review: Careful using this book alone. I studied it exclusively for the test and did very well on the practice "exam." However, the actual test is another animal, entirely. Don't know if I passed yet but I didn't leave the session very confident. You'll need more.

Summary: Ready for the RICA?
Review: I passed the RICA the first try, but it is not solely due to this book. This book is a great springboard for organizing the material. However, I would recommend another book to study with it-- something more substantial to help with the essay portions. If you are in a teacher crendentialing program you are probably using a literacy textbook. Our school uses Gail Thompson's Literacy for the 21st Century, which is excellent.

Summary: It got me 'Ready for RICA!'
Review: I passed! I passed! I PASSED! I just found out that i passed the RICA today (first try) and i'm just a little excited. Okay, fellow aspiring teachers. It's time to give credit to where credit is due. This is the primary book i used to study for the RICA and i was so glad i used it. It is very organized and very informative. In the intro, it tells you what to expect and how to prepare yourself for the test. Then, there are 13 chapters of information that aren't just for preparing for the RICA, but things you'll need to know on a daily basis when teaching. Finally, there is a sample RICA test followed by an explanation of the answers.

The reason this book gets only 4 stars is because it didn't cover much on the essay part of the test. I used another book "Case Studies in Prep for the RICA", which provides a lot of cases for you to look at but has a very different format from the RICA, so be aware. One last resource i used was the sample exam which can be downloaded from the RICA website www.rica.nesinc.com. Study the written exams on the website and this book "Ready for Rica" and you'll do fine. I'm one those people that usually don't do well in exams, so allow me to say, 'If I can do it, you can!' Good luck aspiring teachers. Hope this helps.

Summary: It is very useful
Review: It is very useful review for the RICA, I took it last Saturday and found the prep had provided me a lot of useful review and info.
Together, study the sample exam from the rica.nesinc.com web site, they are very similar.

The essay questions from above two sources are very similar on the actual exam, just the grades on the questions may be different.
Study hard on reading comprehension, spelling instruction and vacab development.

Must know those phonemic awareness terminologies!

Good luck to you!

Summary: Not ready for the RICA
Review: Not ready for the RICA should be the topic of this book. This book did not help me at all on the exam. It did not prepare me well enough for the essay section particulary the case study section of the exam. Don't buy. It is a waste of money.

Summary: 'passed on the first try!!!
Review: Ready for RICA is a fantastic book. It is a simple, concise book that tells you exactly what you need to pass the RICA. Each section is well organized and easy to follow. I would only suggest that Mr. Zarrillo revise the sample questions in the next edition and make them a little more challenging. Otherwise, Ready for RICA was an outstanding bargain, and... I passed on the first try!!!

Summary: A Must-Have Study Guide
Review: Ready for RICA is an extremely well organized, concise guide to help you prepare for the very tough RICA exam. The book is broken down into each of the content areas covered on the exam and gives you a quick yet thorough overview of what you need to know to pass the test. One of the most valuable parts of the book is the introduction and test-taking strategies section. All in all, I found Ready for RICA an effective prep guide for the exam--I passed on the first try.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Informative yet not enough Essay example
Review: The book prepared me for the RICA, yet I wished it had more practice essay questions. The more examples, the better!
