Rating: Summary: Clear, Applicable, Easy Review: I felt like I needed to write my own appraisal of Teaching With Love and Logic in order to offer an opposing opinion to those opinions written by two other reviewers. One reviewer said this book was repetitive. This is true, but for an important reason: There are only a few basic Love and Logic® principles! What Teaching With Love and Logic does is take these few principles and show the reader how to apply them in various situations, differing environments and with a range of grade levels. Another reviewer said that this book is overwhelming. The principles of L & L are simple to understand and even easier to apply. Teaching With Love and Logic will help teachers become stress-free and find more time and energy to focus on effective and rigorous teaching. Can you imagine a classroom full of responsible, productive, and happy students who are in control of their own behavior? It is possible! Love and Logic® works! You can have fun teaching again! Becoming a Love and Logic® teacher is the best thing you can do for yourself and for your students. Teaching With Love and Logic is a powerful resource for any teacher. Check out the other Love and Logic® books, too!
Rating: Summary: A MUST for all teachers Review: I have several L&L audotapes & books, I bought this one to help work with my children's teachers. I want my children to be responsible for their own grades, classroom behavior and completion of homework. One teacher told me that there is very little she could do to improve classroom behavior and another told me I had better help my child with his homework. The intervetion list is absolutely terrific tool - 13 things teachers can do to improve classroom behaviors and great for home as well. I am donating a copy to the school - hope the teachers will listen.
Rating: Summary: Teaching With Love & Logic Review: I read the book from cover-to-cover, but the organization of the text will allow readers to jump to specific topics if they are seeking ideas for dealing with a particular challenge. I liked the many examples of possible classroom situations and solutions presented by the authors. The authors provide well-honed points on the importance of being prepared to answer challenging situations with a Calm, Logical and Respectful response. I also appreciated the common sense statements like, "You can't make people angry and sell them something at the same time." which are boldfaced throughout the book to drive home important points.
Rating: Summary: Teaching with Love and Logic Review: I was VERY disappointed in this book. As someone who has been working in the classroom for the last year, I was disgusted and disappointed with the tactics to gain control in the classroom this book suggests. I was offended by the stressful and manipulative tactics to endear yourself to a student, and I feel this book is NOT a good book for current or prospective teachers. As a teacher I work with who has 30 years of experience said to me, "as teachers, we can't solve every child's problems, but we have to try."...this book suggests tactics that get you home on time and leave the child with more stress, worry and confusion.

Rating: Summary: New teachers: This could be your best buy! Review: I'm in my second year of teaching fifth grade, and have been using L-and-L for about a year. I can't believe it wasn't in my college curriculum because of how simple, rational, and effective the approach is to using. You'll have more success and more fun disciplining your students than you will following any of the more-traditional methods you probably saw used when you were a student. You won't be burdened as heavily with frustrations due to power struggles and unsuccessful punishments. You should also feel pretty good about how this approach builds kids up by empowering them with choices. Furthermore, you don't have to attend a long seminar to make it work. I might sound like I've been paid to write this (and I haven't!), but it's the best buy you can make, and it's an easy, enjoyable read.
Rating: Summary: Idealism at its Peak Review: If only classroom discipline was as simple as this...or as idealistic.
Maybe it works in American classrooms...I don't know. But it certainly falls flat for Asian classrooms.
There may be a need to return to the drawing board and check how feasible these strategies could ever be, even if you are an experienced teacher.
Rating: Summary: The best book about teaching ever written! Review: Teaching is about relationships. Why did they not teach us this college???? Don't just read the book- get the videos. The principles in this book are guaranteed to give you success in the classroom.
Rating: Summary: Useful but overwhelming Review: Teaching with Love and Logic offers many wonderful tips to create a positive learning environment. However, the text is rather lengthy and tends to repeat itself. The length and organization of the text make it rather difficult to comprehend and absorb. Perhaps, reorganizing the text to be more succinct would make it easier to "put into action."
Rating: Summary: An easy and sensible approach to discipline that works! Review: The beginning part of this book outlines the philosophy of Love and Logic in the classroom. It is presented clearly and logically. The next part deals with a step by step method of implementing in within your own classroom. The final couple chapters are written by teachers/principals who have taken this philosopy of respect and dignity into whole schools. They explain what they did and what the effects were. I have tried this approach in my own classroom and at home with my own kids (Imagine getting kids to do their chores without threats!). The results are startling! Compliance without power struggles; respect without demands; control by giving away control. You will be stunned at how easily it works, how much better of a teacher you will be, and how your kids will respond. (I even have used this when dealing with my colleagues. What fun!)It is not new; it is common sense brought to the front. It is definitely do-able! We are just beginning to adopt this approach schoolwide. I am excited to see how it works. I recommend this book highly to anyone who is frustrated and exhausted from "dealing with students and their mouths" at the end of the day!
