Summary: Very Well Organized
Review: I used this book as part of an online, distance education course I was taking, but mine was instructor-taught. I found the book to be very well organized. It goes through each section of the CPT and ICD-9 manuals, and ties the exercises with actually using the manuals. I liked being "forced" to use the manuals as I would in my job anyway. The material covered was very complete and comprehensive -- I recommend it. But unlike a previous reviewer, I don't see the need for an answer key -- my instructor graded my assignments.

Review: Over all I thought this book was very helpful, however, I do believe that it is necessary to include the answers with the book, as some of us are using this as an add on tool to a class being taken and it would be nice to know if I did the questions correctly. If you are just starting to code this would not be a good book to start with.

Review: The new 4th edition of Step-by-Step Medical Coding has the intext exercise answers in the back of the text. Be certain to get 4th edition to access these answers. The Review Exercises do not have the answers included in the text. The new workbook also has every other answer in the appendix of the text.

Review: This is a good class text. The information is complete and writen in an understandable way. I recommend this book for people just learning about medical coding and for intermediate levels. I wouldn't recommend this book for people that want to do a self study. This book requires an instructor lead course

Review: This is easy to use and really works to learn medical coding. It is written so you can understand it and has a lot of questions right in the text. The answers to the questions are in the back of the book. I also got the workbook, and every other question answer is in the back of that book with hint. This really is a good book. I thought this would be hard for me to learn, but it wasn't.

Summary: Buy CPT and ICD-9-CM books before or with this one.
Review: Without copies of the CPT and ICD-9-CM coding books, this book can only give you an idea of what coding is really like. There are plenty of examples and useful information, but no answers are given for the exercises throughout. The overall content is good, but without the coding books and answers I would not recommend spending the money unless you have the coding books to supplement it.
