Summary: Teacher
Review: As a third grade teacher, currently working with a student with selective mutism, I use Mrs. Kervatt's book on an almost-daily basis. It is easy to read, follow, and implement. I highly recommend it!

Summary: didn't work for me
Review: If your selectively mute child is younger than 6, this book is not for you. I would recomend the 'Relationship Development Intervention' by Steven E. Gutstein to help you. Excellent program which works on young selectively mute children who still have not developed other related phobias to the pathology.

Summary: Spirited Child? Difficult Child? Strong Willed? Temperments?
Review: In my search to find the answers to why my middle child acted so differently than my other 4, and not receiving any answers, I began my own quest. I read books that explained temperments and it helped me understand my daughter. All of the books such as, "Raising your Spirited Child", "The Dificult Child", "The Strong Willed Child", "The Explosive Child" all had the same quality/traits that my daughter was exhibiting. However, it did not address her not speaking in certain situations. I believe all these books can be tied in with Selective Mutism / Communication Anxiety and other Childhood Anxieties. I don't know why my daughter has all these other symptoms such as low sensory, low frustration levels, etc., but after reading the forums at selectivemutism.org I have found that most of these children with SM have the same characteristics. Many have been misdiagnosed with ODD & Autism, among other things.
I just hope more research will be done to help those of us that are raising these special unique children.

Summary: Not a lot of book for the money.
Review: My 5 year old daughter has Selective Mutism. I found other books more helpful and not as costly. I expected more from this book from reading other reviews. When I received the package, I got a stack of paper spiral bound. The first few pages had some useful information, but the same information was found on the web under Selective Mutism. Returned within a day of delivery.

Summary: An Answer to a Prayer!
Review: My 5 year old son is in kindergarten and has selective mutism. I found that The Silence Within and The Supplement are excellent resources for parents and especially for schools. His teacher was so thankful to receive books that have great examples of useful research based strategies and even forms to use. No other books on selective mutism have tangible examples like these. The Silence Within demonstrates the "fading in" strategy on a daily basis, illustrating many very useful ideas and materials for implementing a school plan in a nonthreatening game-like setting. Kudos to Mrs. Kervatt. You've put together two books that are really useful to the school!

Summary: It really does work
Review: This book is an excellent resource for teachers, school administrators and parents. It guides parents and teachers through the long process of gradually lowering a selectively mute child's anxiety so that the child IS ABLE to talk at school. This type of therapy is so important for a child suffering from Selective Mutism. My child and his teacher are currently using this book as a guide for a similar program. After only 3 weeks, he began whispering to the teacher. The program detailed in this book really does work. Parents of SM children, buy this book and give it to your child's teacher. Show it to school administrators and anyone who comes in contact with SM children. I highly recommend this book for all who know a child suffering from selective mutism, shyness, or any other form of anxiety.

Summary: Best book ever!
Review: This book is really a "must have" for anyone who is looking for information on Selective Mutism. I purchased this book and read it from cover to cover the day I received it. I also shared it with the Principal & teachers at my child's school. They had never heard of Selective Mutism. After reading it, they understood. We applied the program Gail used in this book to help my child to overcome Selective Mutism. It is an easy read with laymans terms; not medical terms.
Best book I have purchased & read in a long time!!
