Summary: Leading Out Loud--Sincerity not Spin
Review: In 150 compact pages, the author manages to accomplish what few if any of the thousands of authors who have tilted against the leadership windmill have tried: namely to distill into a concise, clear and compelling model what the true essence of leadership is---and how ANYONE can do it better! Pearce's title, Leading Out Loud belies the vehicle his book relies on---namely communicating--especially leadership speaking. Pearce springboards off John Gardner's classic definition of leadership..."leaders see what is needed and inspire others to take action to effect change "(p.9) and maps out a route for successful completion of a leadership speech as well as a path for the life-long journey of leadership growth and development. Pearce opens by making clear the intimate relationship between leadership and speaking, particularly in the the age of instantaneous global exposure that we currently find ourselves in. He then proceeds with just enough words to elaborate on the heart of effective leadership: authenticity. With leadership speaking as the vehicle--authenticity the driver is defined as a " way of being as a speaker rather than something you do as a speaker..." (p4). Pearce then proceeds to detail the vehicle from hood ornament to back bumper by focsuing on the beginning, middle and end of any act of leadership speaking. The elegance of the book's formula is that as one works through each part of the speech creation process she is also wrestling with the key challenges and dilemmas that permeate all facets of leadership: establishing purpose, demonstrating competence and trustworthiness, expressing appreciation, engaging listeners (followers?), and inspiring commitment.

If you engage Pearce's approach for leadership speaking, you are likely to find yourself writing ( or at least re-reading) some key chapters of your own life story. In an age of unrelenting sound bites and unrepentant politicians--this author's work is the perfect antidote for the spin vortex!

Summary: This author walks and talks the talk
Review: In Leading Out Loud, Terry Pearce highlights the critical nature of consistency between what people say and what they do. Effective leaders communicate clearly and they match their behaviors with their words--they walkthetalk. Consistency between actions and words is at the heart of building credibility and communicating with authenticity. It is essential for enlisting the hearts and minds of people in order to move them to take strategic actions. Terry Pearce walksthetalk and he can teach you how to do it as well.

Walkingthetalk is not a simple matter of imitating best practices or speaking in equations associated with effective communication. It is an internal process of self-reflection and strategic personal growth that is more important than ever in leaders and team members at all levels of an organization. In Leading Out Loud, Terry Pearce presents a compelling reason and process for people to embrace the internal changes that will ensure their effectiveness and integrity as powerful, compassionate leaders who can enlist hearts and minds--their own and those of others.

Pearce's message is compelling in large part because it is delivered from his heart and mind. That's because Terry Pearce himself walks the talk.

After decades of consulting as a psychologist in medical settings (including fourteen years as an Adjunct faculty member at Dartmouth Medical School); competitive sports arenas with elite athletes, teams and their coaches; manufacturing floors; and corner offices with competitors seeking the edge and mindsets for winning with values, I have seen the power of walking the talk for any leader seeking to build credibility with team members and others. Terry Pearce understands this and he practices it.

Read this book if you want to learn how to access your internal force and authenticity that will enable you to walk the talk and touch the hearts and minds of those around you to move people to take the strategic actions that will ensure success--with values.

Summary: powerful insights regarding authenticity and connection
Review: Leading Out Loud provides powerful insights into the challenges of communicating and living authentically. Who would have thought it would be so hard to have our "own voice" resonate fully for ourselves and others?

Pearce poses the questions that help us do the thought provoking work necessary to develop and refine our personal perspectives, communications and actions. I approached this book as someone interested in leadership and finished it with insights into all aspects of myself - business person, spouse, child, and friend.

Throughout the book, Pearce offers rich examples (from world renowned public figures to students preparing themselves to enter adulthood) that illustrate the struggles we all face with being authentic. The messages in this book will help anyone who has a passion to make things happen.

Fittingly Pearce doesn't speak from stage left. He is unafraid to use his own life, both its successes and struggles to illustrate and affirm his perspective.

We can hear you fine Mr. Pearce.

Summary: Creating new vistas for any human interaction
Review: Mr. Pearce installs new lights on the path for those wishing to developing a clarity of intent for themselves, as well as guiding the direction of how to communicate that intent to all that one comes in contact with. One of the greatest tests of a business title to me is does the material offered affect me as a person in multiple aspects of my life -- am I introduced to a deeper understanding of myself and enabled to place that understanding into my actions. Leading Out Loud passes this test, allowing my colors to fly with new definition.

A MUST READ!

Summary: Inspiring and Practical
Review: Terry has managed to pull off a feat that I rarely see in the world of business writing. He has written a book that is both inspirational and practical. From the beginning, he speaks simply and eloquently, to the longing in all of us to fully express 'who we are' and 'what we stand for' in all our relationships and interactions. He then goes on to offer a reflection and communication model that really works! And it works equallly well in advancing critical business agendas or addressing important personal issues.... Plus, Leading Out Loud is an 'easy read' - clear, deep, great examples, comprehensive without overdoing it. What more could you want!!!
