Rating: Summary: The help I needed to get a busy toddler interested in books! Review: I was desperate! My husband and I are readers. Our house if full of books. I started buying & reading children's books (aloud) while pregnant. I read aloud while she slept. I tried having my husband read while we nursed - my child was annoyed by the interruption. She never seemed to respond to the books & as soon as she was able, would grab them out of our hands. All of my lovely images of us snuggled together reading into the future were fading away, I was heartbroken. As a toddler the books were used primarily to work on her throwing practice. Then I found this book. She is 17 months old & I just a few days ago I read the book & followed his advice. He helped me to pick the appropriate books for her age, interest and activity level. She now will listen to me read a (/an appropriate) book. She is interested in books & "reads" them herself. Tonight when I asked her which book she wanted to read before bed, she picked up "Brown Bear" (Eric Carle), opened it and looked at every page, made the appropriate animal sounds, then looked at it again & showed me every animals eyes (she just learned how to say "eye"). She then gave me another book for me to read to her. I am overjoyed! There is also other wonderful information about developing your personal library, using the public library system, getting schools involved, etc. I did not need to be convinced about the joys of reading aloud, I needed the how-to and this book provided it for me.

Also exceptional are the sections on Oprah, Harry Potter and "Series" child readers devour. In the Oprah section, Trelease discusses what she has done to increase active readers in our adult population and how to do the same for the children you reach (talk about books animatedly, passionately, and discuss a bit and then bring it back into the discussion again and again and again... always animatedly and with passion). This title honors children and parents... and I find myself revisiting the treasury of books over and over and over and will purchase the recommended books. Rating: Summary: Great for new parents Review: I've been reading aloud to my eldest child for seven years, but I still learned a lot from reading this book. This is a great gift for a new parent. Forget the little baby clothes. Parents can use this book for many years.
Rating: Summary: The read-aloud handbook Review: If every politician in America would read this book, we wouldn't have pointless education legislation that encourages "skill and drill." Trelease knows what really works, both at home and in the classroom. I can't remember my favorite childhood phonics activity, but I can certainly remember my favorite childhood books. Children who hate reading don't read. Using Trelease's ideas, we can teach every child to love reading and to love learning.

Rating: Summary: Essential for parents and teachers Review: If you are a parent or teacher this book is essential. Trelease's chapters on the value of reading are fascinating and inspirational. The list of read-aloud books children will love is absolutely accurate. Every one of these books is a good read-aloud. This will save you tons of time finding books for your children and will guide you to wonderful books you have never heard of.
Rating: Summary: essential book Review: If you are a parent, a teacher, or a grandparent (or ever will be one of these categories), or spend any time at all with young people from age 1 day old through high school age, you have to have this book. Otherwise, you don't need it.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful resource for parents! Review: If you weren't convinced before, you soon will be: Reading to your child is the most important gift you can give! The first part of the Trelease's text is an inspired mix of scientific proof and anecdotal evidence about the life-changing nature of reading to children. I particularly liked his encouragement of reading to older kids and teenagers! It's a fun read, even if you are already committed to reading as part of your parenting style (as we were). The last section of this book is a good, though by no means exhaustive, list of literature that is appropriate for reading aloud to various aged children. Lots of good picks here, though some of my old favorites were missing, alas. Trelease also mentions that comic books are a great way to get kids to start reading, but then doesn't give enough information about appropriate reads for kids. Since most of the comic market today is adult oriented, it would be helpful for most folks to have more guidance in this area. There are wonderful comic book titles appropriate for kids out there like "Akiko", "Leave it to Chance", "Bone" -- even kid versions of old favorites like "Batman Adventures" and "Justice League Adventures". Your local comic book store will point you in the right direction, but since the comic medium is such a great intro for the beginning reader, he could have included more information.
