Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Discrete Structures
Review: This book was not bad, however be it a text book or not it did not deserve the price tag. I had to buy it for a class that i had and i did not learn anything from reading it.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Just Great Book
Review: Its a book well written in simple context. I am taking a course in a computer science major and this is my text book for this course. Its very helpful to understand the real logic of a subject.

Summary: This is the worst math book I've ever used
Review: As a college senior in Computer Science with a 3.9 GPA, I find this book extremely difficult to read and understand (not the math; the text itself). I have A's in Applied Calc, Calc I and Linear algebra, so it's not like I haven't seen math books before. The explanations of theorems and algorithms are pathetic. The examples are even worse. In many cases, he has tables that contradict his explanations in the text or are at the very least, unqualified. The Author even includes problems in the review sections that were not introduced in the text. I couldn't find anything about this mystery "product" problem in the Schaum's Discrete Mathematics book (which I can understand). Additionally, I talked to two professors who agreed that his explanations of the Big-O theorem and boolean logic are horrible. If you are a professor, and you are looking to teach your students as much as possible, PLEASE, PLEASE don't use this poor excuse for a book. Discrete math is fine, the text is not user friendly.

Summary: good source for problems, but hard to learn from
Review: I used Rosen's book for a Discrete Math course given at the sophomore level. If I had to sum this book up in few words, I would say, Short on explanations and examples, but long on exercises. I almost gave this book 3 stars because of the abundance of problems, but with the poor exposition and simple examples, I just couldn't in good conscience. My advice is to find another book from which to learn, but check out the problems to enhance your knowledge.

Summary: Makes Discrete Maths Fun!!!
Review: I hated having to sit through 3 hour boring lectures on this subject. Thanks to Mr Rosen, I actually look forward to sitting down with this book to read the explanations provided by Mr Rosen; even after the end of an uninspiring lecture and ineffective drone that I have been putting up with. I guess it is a book that helps me understand, so anyone reading it still has to use his head to proof the theorems. Good style of explanation and presentation.

Summary: Comprehensive but not detailed.
Review: This book is very thorough in covering areas of discrete mathematics that apply to the field. I would call this book a "survey". Like a good introduction to Calculus, it covers the topic; and, similarly, it is not detailed specifically. The warning I would give to students using this book is: it's brief. The first two sections of the first chapter are an entire semester in logic! So, you will need to read this book very carefully and seriously consider supplemental materials in areas that you're weak and/ or inexperienced.

Summary: Application Shows You Beauty
Review: I hesitated when I was about to buy it since it had an average rating below 4 stars. But when I got this book and began reading it, I was attracted to it. The beauty of this book lies in the application of mathematics. At each section, the book starts from introducing basic concepts (often with historical background) and finishes with applications of these concepts (mostly to computer science). The beauty of mathematics is abstraction. However, mathematics, which itself is already abstracted, is dull and hard to understand. Only when you experience the process of abstraction and "de-abstraction" (i.e. application), you will be shocked by its beauty. This book somehow reveals the beauty to its readers by "de-abstraction". A lot of exercises, which are emphasized by the author, following each section also serve this purpose well.

I would give it five stars. But the chapters in the book are loosely organized. Examples in the book are a little "jumpy" and need more details.

Summary: Sad but true...
Review: As most of the other people have stated, this book is without a doubt one of the worst reads I have come across. I had to chuckle when one of the other reviews mentioned the Linear Algebra book by Lay...an excellent book. This book, however, fails to use an approach useful to students because it seems to be written to other mathematicians. This is typical because math books are reviewed by other mathematicians. It is a "good" book if it is difficult to read! The lack of logical progression from step to step in the proofs simply frustrate the learner. Moreover, the complication of simple concepts is the usual approach here because the writer erroneously assumes that everyone speaks "math speak". Final word: Remember your roots Mr. Rosen...come back to earth.

Summary: Incredibly Challenging!!!!
Review: If you are a Computer Scientist, Mathematician, or any other type of technical person, this book is a must!!!!!!! Not only does it gives challenging problems, but it prepares the student for further studies in CS and Math. The text also motivates you (like a game) to want to do some of the more challenging problems!!!! Myself being a Math/CS major found the book to be quite worthwhile and enjoyable.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Discrete Math
Review: I think this is a fine choice for a math class. The examples were easy to follow and the exercises were reasonable...
