Rating: Summary: Untangle the Web! Review: Great book, easy read. Really helps clarify some difficult topics. I can't imagine reading this simply for fun, but if you're a law student, this will be some of the easiest and most productive reading you have!
Rating: Summary: Most of what they say is true Review: Having just finished my civ pro course and final exam (though no grade yet as I write this), I can say I found Glannon's supplement helpful -- especially for the most complicated questions like joinder, jurisdiction, and the intersections of the two. As another reviewer has noted, this isn't a secret weapon, since chances are almost everyone else in your class will have it. (Our prof even made it recommended supplemental reading.) Like all authors, Glannon has his own quirks, and some points he chooses to dwell on may or may not align with what your professor thinks is important. Glannon's somewhat cutesy writing style may get on your nerves after a while, but this book is still almost surely better written than your textbook. You can usually knock off each chapter in an hour or less.
Rating: Summary: This book saved me Review: Having to take Civ Pro from a first year professor is a nightmare. Having to learn Civ Pro at the same time your professor appears to be learning Civ Pro is even worse. Mr. Glannon basically made this somewhat mystifying subject (that really isn't that bad if someone can actually teach it) much much easier.
Rating: Summary: Glannon is really a Civ Pro God. Review: I am not sure what my final grade will be in civ pro at this time, but I guarantee you I would not understand complicated issues such as the Erie doctrine and preclusion if it weren't for Glannon. Those who say that Glannon is not comprehensive must have had a teacher who made sense and were able to take more away from their civ pro class than I did. My teacher was incredibly dry and threw so much black letter law at us that I didn't know which way was up or down. When I began studying for the final, despite doing (most of) my reading, I still felt like I was starting from scratch. And Glannon helped me build my menial civ pro knowledge into a competent database on which I could take from and contribute intelligently on an exam. Of course, I do understand where some are coming from when they say that Glannon won't help you get the coveted law school A+. And so he goes into a lot of detail about the discovery process. But Glannon will help you get an edge on tests, because he provides a clear understanding of what civ pro is all about...which is what a lot of teachers lack the skills to do. Use it throughout the course, and you will find that reviewing for the final is a walk in the park. If you feel you need more, download the free outlines on Lexis Nexis, but don't waste too much time with anything else...Glannon is, more or less, a savior.
Rating: Summary: A valuable guide to the world of Civil Procedure Review: I found Glannon's book to quite informative. The content and examples and explantions at the end of each section cleared up many gray areas. In fact, my Civ Pro professor is considering making it a required text for his next Civil Procedure class.
Rating: Summary: The best book Review: I owe an A+ in Civ Pro to this book. It's the best study guide available.
Rating: Summary: Joe Glannon in my Civ Pro boyfriend Review: I remember this book well from my days as a 1L. You MUST have this book--Civ Pro is a web of rules, and using them wisely is crucial to being an effective litigator. I aced Civ Pro and ended up on Law Review and I always swore I'd write a love letter to Joe Glannon to show my gratitude. Well, consider this review my love letter, Prof. Glannon. This book is a must-have.
Rating: Summary: My Secret Weapon Review: I was lucky enough to find this book very early in my first year civil procedure class. I remember the pure joy I felt reading it, and feeling like I truly understood these sometimes alien concepts for the first time. Surely it couldn't be this easy!?I used these Examples and Explanations books in every class possible. They're all good, but this one is probably the best. Everyone called these books "Glannons," no matter who the author was! One important point: I wrote laborious answers to the examples, which I then "graded" against the explanations, noting issues I'd missed, and analysis I'd mishandled. This practice writing mini "exam style" answers, with instant feedback, probably helped me more than any other exercise in doing well my first year in law school. If you just read the examples and then the explanations, you're cheating yourself out of a great opportunity to practice writing good exam answers before you're faced with the real thing. I ended up making law review after my first year, and I owe a lot of the credit to this incredible book. Do yourself a favor.
Rating: Summary: A must for first year law students Review: If not for this book, I would have been lost in Civil Procedure during my first year of law school. If you are starting law school, get this book. Anything I didn't quite understand in class, this book explained. The examples are invaluable in studying for exams.
