Summary: For the Serious Coach
Review:

This is a great book to study if you are serious about improving your own coaching skills. Bob has done an elegant job of explaining some sophisticated and subtle ideas in clear, expressive terms that illuminate the reader. His ideas on personal transformation and stewardship point the way for the high-performance coach.

Summary: Insightful Coaching
Review: An insightful account of the true meaning of coaching that goes to the heart of building and reliving the human spirit into organizaions that is quite amiss in today's corporate world.

By honing in on true spirit of community building , Hargrove has given the concept of stewardship its real place in today's material and self-interest based society.

Summary: New Paradigm For Werner Erhard's Est?
Review: Are people still being fooled by this same hash and rehash of Werner Erhard's "est," which is going by a new name "The Landmark Forum?" Hargrove's work looks to have been lifted wholesale from the Landmark Education so-called "Curiculum For Living." One wonders if he pays royalties for the use of Werner's, what he himself liked to refer to as, technology. Of course, no one told Werner there were lots of people around who would recognize his use of the word "technology" in this context as having come from one of his inspirations, L. Ron Hubbard and his "Philosophy for Living." And that is what characterizes this book, made all the more obvious by the long list of glowing testimonials, all using thoses tried-and-true estie buzz-words and phrases, the copy-cat, unimaginative litany: transformation, paradigm, empowerment, mastery, extraordinary results, tools for living, taking a stand, blah, blah, and blah. So here is my question. Is Mr. Hargrove shilling for Landmark Education or has he struck out on his own as so many of L. Ron's and now Werner's followers using the same formula and the same ideas? Rick Ross and Steven Hassan's websites have anough background on the "coaching" phenomenon to get you started, if you are curious about the dubious roots of this practice.

Summary: An Excellent Guide Through the Field
Review: Coaching has become a great buzz word. Everyone has or is a coach. I've wondered for years what coaching is really about. And now I understand. Any good professional - therapist, consultant, lawyer, clergyman, doctor, accountant - must spend part of their time moving clients from A to B. "Masterful Coaching" let's you know how to do that in a thoughtful and thorough way. Thank you Robert.

PS: Though many people don't like Werner Erhardt the person, the organization he built, and his marketing/sales tactics let's not throw away the fundamental soundness of the tools he shared.

Summary: Coaching for Transformation
Review: Coaching is the hot buzzword lately. Hargrove makes it clear that coaching is not just a management trend or a fashionable way of describing something like mentoring. There is a technology to coaching and the results can be powerful. I found something useful to me as a coach on almost every page. Exceptionally rich. Everyone who calls themselves a coach, and especially those who work in corporate situations, need to put this title on their desk next to the other reference books.

Summary: Fantastic revision of an already great book!
Review: I found Hargrove's book inspiring, insightful, and useful. I had read his first book - which was pivotal for me in creating my own coaching business-- and have found that he has taken this work to another level-a very compelling, as well as easy read. The two parts that I found most applicable to my own coaching clients were his step-by-step approach to coaching executives and the part on creating a "laboratory" that fosters collaboration within a group. I was able to bring these principles to a client who was wowed by what we were able to generate for her business. I would recommend this book to any coach, internal and external to a company, as well as to any leader who wants to create an "impossible future."

Summary: Masterful Coaching
Review: I would highly recommend Mr. Hargrove's book, Masterful Coaching, for individuals who are ready and willing to take on the challenge of transforming their own life and impacting others both in the workplace and on a personal level. The author assists the reader in the journey to personal transformation and the journey of coaching others to expand and grow. It is not an advice or prescription book but a tool to help one help themselves and also in the process help others. I especially appreciated the "Calling Forth Questions." The passion of the author is evident and the presentations of ideas are thought provoking, human, insightful and straightforward.

3 major points for pondering:

Personal Transformation: The author focuses on taking effective action throughout the book but the personal transformation that the book pushes readers to explore is powerful. "...coach is someone who engages and enters into the learning system of a person, business or social institution with the intent of improving it so as to impact people's ability to perform" (pg. 17) The presentation of coaching methodology and transformational learning discuss an individual's governing values and implications of those values in learning including Triple-loop learning, Double-loop learning, and Single-loop learning. Personal transformation is the foundation for everything that is presented in the book and is key to the "being" of a person.

A way of "Being" is central to being an effective coach: The characteristics of masterful coaches provide a guide for self-reflection and self-growth. The characteristics are the core of who one is and their sense of "being". Characteristics: 1. The ability to inspire; 2. Setting higher standards; 3. Honesty and integrity; 4. Disciplined intensity; 5. Forwarding action; 6. A passion to help others learn, grow, and perform.

Stewardship, commitment and learning models: The author discusses the shift from dominance to learning in groups and organizations and provides examples for the reader to internalize and better understand the paradigm shift. The role of the coach is is defined in the context of being a steward.

Summary: Transformational Coaching with the Enneagram
Review: In his book, Masterful Coaching, Robert Hargrove distinguishes between "incremental learning" (single-loop), "reframing" (double-loop learning), and "transformational learning" (triple-loop). These distinctions (based on the original work of Gregory Bateson, and extended by Chris Argyris and Peter Senge) are important in business settings. Most development work with executives takes place at the incremental level (helping them to embody new skills and capabilities), sometimes at the level of reframing (challenging them to reshape their patterns of thinking), but seldom at the transformational level (creating a shift in context or point of view about themselves--a process I have referred to elsewhere as "stepping into a parallel universe"). My approach to working in organizations has been to incorporate the Enneagram with existing organization development, change, and leadership theory and practice. In consulting with and creating development plans for hundreds of executives, and working with numerous teams in organizations, I've had the advantage of observing all nine Enneagram types in a variety of business settings. And I have found the Enneagram to be the most powerful system for moving my clients to the level of reframing and sometimes to the transformational level.
