Summary: Brief yet comprehensive immunology text
Review: "Immunology" by Janis Kuby is one of not many texts available in today's market that can explain complicated concepts of immunology quite nicely. It is a text that is suitable for introductory class as well as a good reference for those who need to brush up their immunology concept in a short period of time. The author explains well in terms of definition and the major functions of each individual cells in the immune system. The concept is also not redundant and repititive. It is an easy-to-read text and the terms used are not too complicated. Another good text to try!

Summary: Infinitely more confusing than immunology should be.
Review: As a first year graduate student of biology (having a significant molecular and cellular biology background), I have found Dr. Kuby's book to be excessively confusing. Ofcourse she knows the material well, but she explains it in the book almost with the assumption that students like myself already have a similar background as her's. It is chock full of areas that are poorly and incompletely explained (or not explained at all) and in several cases throughout the book, she even contradicts herself! It makes learning immunology difficult, because one finds themselves having the need to look in outside sources for better and more complete explanations for certain numbers of immunological processes that Dr. Kuby ignored clarifying in her book. Her explanations of proteins, chemicals, etc. are fine, however. But at no point in her book can one get a complete, comprehensive picture of how our immune system works as a whole; such as in interaction/activation of various immune cells with eachother. The only reason I gave this book two stars versus the lowest score of one star is because I did manage to learn a great deal from it. But in my opinion, anyone who wishes to learn immunology with a good understanding of its functionality in our bodies will find this book to be quite poor.

Summary: Pretty Good, if you like immunology
Review: Great pics and diagrams. If you are an immuno fan you will injoy it. Personally I don't like the subject. Easy to read book, but could use more beginners notes.

Summary: Strong text
Review: I have Roitt's Immunology and Janeway's Immunobiology at my disposal as well, but neither presents material as simply and clearly as Kuby Immunology.

The strength of the book is largely in the fantastic illustrations. The generic illustrations supplemented with large blocks of staid text one finds in other immunology books can't even begin to compare. Concentrated study of the figures in this book elucidates many concepts that seem difficult to describe otherwise.

Additionally, the book is divided up into many short chapters on subjects like B and T cell maturation, hypersensitivity, the T-cell receptor, etc. The superb organization is logical and easy to follow, making review and independent study a pleasure.

There's certainly more advanced books on specific topics, but Kuby Immunology is a great starter and basic reference.

Summary: A very good immunology text
Review: I read this text as a source for my immunology class and it helps me a lot. I love the way the author organizes the idea throughout the book. It is quite easy to follow and not too many complicated terms that are seen in many texts of the same field. The figures shown in the book are outstanding. I admit that immunology has never been my choice of field to study but this book really helps me pass this subject nicely and I count myself know a lot about immunology now. Try reading this book and you will know what I mean. Good luck!

Summary: It is a great book
Review: I really love this book. The author knows what immunology is and expresses her knowledge nicely. It also help me a lot in my class and my comprehensive examination. I really recommend anyone who wants to know basic immunology read this book. You will not regret.

Summary: This book is a must have for immunology students
Review: Kuby's book is probably one of the better text books to have if you are an immunology student. Kuby goes into detail that you will not find in other books. It is written for a higher level of understanding than most other text books. It is certainly not a beginners book. I definitely recommend this book to every graduate student studying immunology.

If a more general book is needed, try Abbas' "Cellular and Molecular Immunology". Janeway's "Immunobiology" is geared more for medical students than immunologists.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Excellent introductory book
Review: Kuby's book was the main text for an introductory immunology class I took over the summer and again for another course I'm taking this semester. I have found it to be a clear, thourough, and highly informative resource and I highly reccomend it to anyone looking for an introduction or background in this field
