Rating: Summary: The Gold Standard for a proper USMLE Step 1 review! Review: For Step 1 I memorized this book. I memorized Lange's Pharm review and Micro and Immuno review. I memorized Lange's "Pathophysiology of Disease". I memorized Lippencot's Biochem review, and then just brushed up on Histo, Embryo, Neuro and the clincial aspects of anatomy. I regurgitated it all on the step 1 and broke 250 for my score! Pretty much based on this alone I think I got into the neurosrgery residency of my choice which I started last July. I assume this as I went to a lower tier medical school that certainly didn't open up any doors for me. So if you want to do the same, I suggest you buy Ganong's book and start cramming. It is a fun book to read and not dumb-downed like Costanza and the other physio review books. This is a good book to supplement your syllabus notes also if you are a first year student. It is much better to read than boring books like Berne and Levy (which I used for the class). Also If you memorize Ganong and are able to regurgitate it, you will do well in your third and fourth year rotations also (well at least some of them). Good Luck with Step 1!
Rating: Summary: A great book on physiology Review: Ganong's book on physiology is the best physiology book I have encountered. It was difficult to read at the time, but all the details were important, and the knowledge helped me through many subjects later. It contains all the information you will ever need on physiology, and the index is extensive. If you want a fast-read, easy book, this is not it.
Rating: Summary: A brilliant book Review: Ganong's Review of Medical Physiology is an absolute marvel of brevity and conciseness. It has all the information you need -as up-to-date as it is possible in a textbook and faultlesly organized. All the fundamental concepts are explained in a clear and lucid style -and they are invariably presented from a molecular point of view, which facilitates understanding enormously. None of Guyton's verbosity to be found here. A work of real talent.
Rating: Summary: great Review: great book, the best ever seen for medicine students previusly iniciated in the phisiology study.Hard book to study for the first time but clearly easier, and more serius than Guyton in its developement;not so much pictures but much more quality
Rating: Summary: I love this book Review: I agree with the other reviewers who have pointed out that this is a "review" book and not a textbook, and thus is often too brief and condensed in style for those who are new to the subject of physiology. However, the 'classic' physiology textbooks (i.e. Guyton or Berne & Levy), while excellent when you are new to the subject, are vast tomes - each section being a hundred pages long or more. That's fine when you are starting out, but you will come to them with a heavy heart when you are pushed for time or cramming for exams. That's where Ganong's brevity is a real advantage - it covers all the major points, without "dumbing down" the science which can lead to misconceptions, and it doesn't weigh a tonne. Thus it provides a very comprehensive review of physiology (and a good deal of neuroscience) without breaking either your biceps or your bank ! What I really love about Ganong is that it is so up-to-the-minute. The knowledge that you gain from Berne & Levy and Guyton will be expanded to the next level by Ganong. Sometimes I actually pick it up and read it just for the hell of it, it's so interesting...It's also particularly strong on physiology at the cellular and molecular level, which is obviously increasingly important in modern medicine. I'm a medical student and loads of my friends rave about this book. It has also been recommended to me by a number of doctors and professional scientists. Bravo, Prof Ganong - I'm looking forward to the next edition!
Rating: Summary: Good to search materials, but bad to learn from Ganong Review: I am a medical student. I bought Ganong 18th edition last year. I found it full of new materials but everything it said was not detailed enough to make me understand. If you are a freshman to the subject physiology,I recommand you not to use Ganong as your first book. You must read other books written in detail, like Guyton's Physiology first. A more detailed book would make you easy to understand the beauty of physiology.
Rating: Summary: Excellet physiology book. Review: I use this book for my physiology course in the school of medicine and a think that it's an great reference. The chapters are short and easy to read. The book is very up-date and have much information, considering the size of the book. It's good for the exams, because have much information in a few pages it's like a resume, but very complete. I like much this book.
Rating: Summary: Very good handbook to learn from. Review: I'm a medical student. I'm learning from Ganong's book & I can say that my notes are better since I have this book.
Rating: Summary: A great book on physiology Review: If you intend to hit the 95th percentile or higher on the USMLE you must master the material in this book. Step 1 is the most important test of your life and if you try to get by with "First Aid" and the BRS book, you will be crushed by the competition. If you aren't interested in a competitive residency then it doesn't matter what you study. If you are interested in Radiology, Ortho, Plastic, Derm or Optho programs (which all demand applicants of the highest cognitive ability) then this is even more essential. Yes it is longer than most resources so get an early start and start outlining by the start of your second year. In fact, I would suggest First Years start memorizing as soon as they can. Don't forget STEP 1 is the most important exam that you will face far more important than the SAT or MCAT. I might even go so far to say that if you are a senior of junior in Undergrad and belive you can get into medical school and believe that you have the cognitive ability to do one of the hard residencies, then buy this book now and try to read 10-20 pages every day until D DAY arrives at the end of second year because if you blow step 1 then it is over and you will be doing medicine or path or family. FYI for Biochem master that book written by the guy from at Stanford, Pharm-Katzung, Path-Big Robbins Anatomy-Moore will suffice but Gray would be better. Read all those and you will destroy your competition. Good Luck with step 1!!!!!
