Summary: An authority on literacy!
Review: Gail Tompkins' book is brilliant. It is teacher-friendly and research-based. It includes a guide to the reading process, lays out the three cueing systems in a clear fashion, and presents endless strategies for teaching the language arts. It even includes a list of all Newbury and Caldecott Winners, an extensive bibliography of the pedagogy, and an appendix of EXCELLENT teaching strategies. If you're looking for a map through the literacy minefield, this is it! Highly recommended.

Summary: I found some technology aides in this book.
Review: I did not read the whole book. I was reviewing the content for technology aides for the educator (i.e., teachers). The two chapters I did review; I found insightful for the teacher in respect to the reading and writing process and methods to aid the instructor. On the technology end, I was hoping for more information but this was out of frustration with my assignment. There are technology aids scattered thoughout the book in the form technology links, as the author put it. Examples of these technology links are word-processing programs, videotape profolios, and others. In filling out this review, I am doing electronic dialoguing or sharing my responses about the book. Please, take my rating as very subjective, since I did not read the whole text. I wanted a whole chapter on technology, but as my professor pointed out. That can be a whole book in itself. May all individuals find the joy of reading and writing.

Summary: The best reading methods textbook I've found
Review: I teach a course in elementary reading methods for undergraduate education students. This is the third textbook I've tried, and it is excellent! It has what students need to know about the theory and practice of teaching reading, written in a very readable, non-overwhelming way. Plus it has lots of practical teaching ideas. Our lab school saw it and ordered several copies for its teachers also. I highly recommend it.

Summary: A must have!!
Review: I was first introduced to this book in one of my graduate literacy courses and I have been hooked every since. The teachers at my school pass it around constantly looking for ideas. My favorite aspect of this book is the fact that there are real teachers giving real examples of what works in their classrooms. There are no strategies that seem too hard implement in your classroom, because the layout is right there!! You know it can be done and it words because the examples in the book are proof! You don't feel like you are reading about some ideal or Utopia of a classroom. You are reading about REAL classrooms. I absolutely love it!

Summary: A Balanced Approach
Review: This book is a great resource. Ms. Thompson believes that it is imperative that teachers offer students a comprehensive, balanced approach. She reasons that one should mix whole language with phonics. This resource is very readable and practical, and not riddled with lofty, educational jargon.
