Summary: Buy this book if you want to really learn your medical terms
Review: I bought this book as a requirement for an independent study course. I wasn't required to buy the sixth edition but I did just the same and I found I made the right decision. I found the material easy to read with a friendly tone and an extremely useful presentation. The layout of the chapters and the excercises provided helped me to clearly understand, use, and learn the terms. I worked on this book without the aid of a teacher or classroom setting and I feel this book has made the difference between just memorizing material for a later test and really knowing the terms. Also, the CD-ROM that comes with this book made an excellent reference aid and a perfect way to test and reinforce my knowledge. (Clicking on the "figure" button in the multi-media program yielded some interesting surprises) As a result of using this book, I was able to achieve an excellent mark in the Medical Terminology module of my independent study course. I would recommend it to anyone who wants or needs to know their medical terms for any health related field.

Summary: Excellent for Medical Transcriptionists
Review: I bought this book as a supplement to the education I received to become a medical transcriptionist. It was very useful as well while I was studying for my certification. The material is laid out in a clear and logical manner, and the glossary in the back is excellent. I found the CD to be good reenforcement of the material in the book.

Summary: A "learner-friendly" medical terminology textbook and more!
Review: I have used The Language of Medicine in a hospital, community college, and university setting for courses in medical terminology. It is one of the most comprehensive texts on this subject that I have reviewed. It affords the medical terminology student the ability to learn independently. It allows an instructor to teach to a myriad of learning objectives. The author has provided instructors and students alike a classic, well researched, and updated text on the subject of medical terminology.

Summary: CD not for Mac, but FABULOUS text!
Review: I just purchased this book, and I am thus far thrilled with the natural flow of learning this terminology. The book is well organized. Unfortunately, I cannot get the CD to work, nor can I access the website listed. I have Mac OS X operating system, which is likely the problem. Otherwise, great book!

P.S. I have used the software now on a PC, and it is wonderful! The quizzes and self-study guides are exactly what I needed to truly master the material, and it is fun!

Summary: Great Book!
Review: I love this book. I have had no prior medical terminology experience. This book is practical and laid out in an easy to understand format. It is a textbook with plenty of review exercises at the end of each chapter as well as interactive exercises on the CD. When you complete a chapter with all of the exercises you will know and understand the information presented. The text is arranged by body system which makes learning easier.

Summary: Much better than I expected!
Review: I must say that I was pleasantly surprised at the size and quality of this book! I happened to purchase the 6th edition, and I'm glad I did. The first thing that caught my eye was the impressive layout. Next, I was impressed with the colors and awesome diagrams! The book also comes with a CD-ROM program (which includes images and video clips) that is truly helpful in testing and evaluating what you've learned using a variety of stimulating methods. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is studying in the medical field or who is just interested in learning "The Language of Medicine." Kudos to Davi-Ellen Chabner and all involved in creating this awesome edition!

Summary: Good for medical transcriptionists; All body systems complete
Review: I used this book to learn medical terminology for my career in medical transcription. This book was excellent for that use. Fairfax Cty. Adult Ed. uses this as its text for Medical Terminolgy. The disks in the back are helpful too; assist a person with pronounciation of terms.

Summary: I'm available for questions, comments and suggestions
Review: I'm happy to have this opportunity to communicate with people who are interested in learning about the medical language. It has been a fascinating adventure for me for over 25 years now. I began teaching medical terminology at the National Institutes of Health in the Washington, D.C. area, and I'm still teaching, but now in the Boston area. I welcome dialogue with students and teachers and the public in general. I hope you find The Language of Medicine helpful in communicating with doctors, both in the workplace and as health care consumers. The Language of Medicine and my second book, Medical Terminology:A Short Course (2nd edition) are both self-teaching workbooks. They include questions and answers, diagrams to label, pronunciation guides, practical case studies and reports... all you need to understand the medical language using a logical, organized, step-by-step approach! Plus, they are helpful references after you complete your study and are on the job. They contain easily accessed information on major laboratory tests, clinical and imaging procedures, and common abbreviations that are most frequently encountered in the medical setting. The most important aspect of my books is that I EXPLAIN the terminology of anatomy, physiology and pathology in its proper context. You learn more than just word analysis, but really UNDERSTAND what is going on in the body in health and disease. I don't presuppose that my readers have any science background, so The Language of Medicine and Medical Terminology: A Short Course can be understood by any high school student and beyond. My own training is in zoology and physiology and I have a master's degree in science teaching. I teach in hospitals, HMOs, insurance companies, and schools to allied health workers (secretaries, unit clerks, medical records, nurses, therapists, social workers, chaplains,...any paramedical personnel). I am also available to speak to patient groups and adult education classes. I love to TEACH and will design a course or program to suit the needs of any particular group. If you decide to try one of my books, PLEASE contact me and I will be available to help in any way possible! If you would like to be a teacher of medical terminology, I am happy to help you get started and share my Instructor's Manual with you! Currently, I am at work on the 6th edition of The Language of Medicine, which will have a CD-ROM component. I would love to hear suggestions and ideas about what you would like to see included in the new edition. Thank you for your interest in my books and in learning medical terminology. I hope that you let me hear from you! If you have any questions about The Language of Medicine before you try it, please don't hesitate to contact me. Most of all, have fun with this new language!
