Rating: Summary: Simply the best Review: This is the best calculus textbook I have encountered I am a computer science major and I found this book extreemly helpful and gives the right depth. I keep it as a refrence now and always get back to it to refresh my memory. Can't understand how people give a negative review about it
Rating: Summary: Again and again and again Review: Again I will say for the umpteenth time. This book is NO GOOD. I DON'T CARE WHAT KIND OF IMPROVEMENTS THIS LOW-QUALITY BOOK MADE. I've used the 4th edition of this low quality book and I saw the previous editions to it. I don't EVEN begin to think that this so-called new 5th addition brings anything new to the table that the calculus student can benefit from. I will speak as a pharmacy student from an accredited pharmacy school. If any professor asked me to recommend a calculus book to teach his class the one recommendation I would give to that math teacher is to "STAY AWAY FROM THIS AUTHOR AND HIS CALCULUS BOOKS". There are way too may user-friendly calculus that explain the concepts and methodology of calculus one million times better than what Stewart and his collegues can write. Stewart needs to retire from the math texbook writing business.
Rating: Summary: Very decent Review: I found hard to believe people saying negative thing about this book. I personally believe this is the best book out there. The basic concepts are very clearly illustrated and the exercise problems are very helpful for understanding the book content. If you ever had other calculus books to compare with, you will know exactly what I am taking about: this is the best of all. I love this book and it really aroused my interest in Calculus.
Rating: Summary: not exactly a very good, but the best one I've encountered Review: I've encounted numerous calculus books so far in my study in math. Looking back now, I have to say this is the best basic calculus book out there. It presents many critical concepts, and I encourage anyone who is thinking of studying further math to buy this book and study the concepts well.. i mean, real well. You will be rewarded.
Rating: Summary: Good Calculus Book Review: This book is easily the best calculus book I've ever used. In high school we used two seperate books, but they did not explain the material like Stewart's did. The only problem with this book is that the solution manual is too good, and lazy students, such as myself, use them as a crutch when complicated problems arise. This book, however, will allow a student to skip a couple lectures here and there without being completely lost. Other books fail to deliver relavent examples and useful information as well as this one.
Rating: Summary: The best Review: This was my book at College for studying Calculus of a single variable, simply the best, don't waste your time and money with other books, this is the only one and best book ever written about Calculus.
Rating: Summary: Not a good book to learn from. Review: This text might be a good suppliment for a class tought by a higly motivated professor, but is awful for learning from. In other words, this book is a suppliment, or a reference, not a teacher. I've used almost all of Stewarts books on the Calculus, and I find the books to be great to reference or memorize formulas from, but that's as far as it goes. Don't buy it unless you must. Also, I've found several errors in the text.
Rating: Summary: Not for the slack student Review: This text book was extremely difficult to understand when I first bought it. Even after spending a significant amount of time on that book alone, calculus to me was still confusing. This is the text book I used for my computer science course. Had to drop the calculus units since I found it hard. But when I decided to jump right into Discrete Mathematics for computer science, I was forced to review through my college algebra notes. It was after I finished discrete mathematics did I finally understand the formality of Stewarts text book which made it so difficult to understand. In high school calculus text books, the language used arent so formal. In fact, reading a high school calculus text book is like reading a text book on college algebra and trigonometry. Stewarts text book require that you understand the language of proving theorems and thats what Discrete Mathematics in computer science taught me. But let me warn you that you should also thoroughly read through a text book on college algebra and trigonometry plus geometry. Combine that with Discrete Mathematics and you will see the beauty of stewarts text book.
Rating: Summary: Tries to be an "all in one" calculus text Review: There are really only a few kinds of calculus books. There are ones for serious mathematics students or mathematicians. These books are typically filled with theorems, proofs, and a comprehensive anaylsis into each theorem. There are textbooks for the typical student who is not into math. In these books, plenty of examples are worked out so that every derivation is illustrated. The proofs of many theorems are omitted and they are assumed to be true. Both types of books are perfectly suited to their audience. The high level text is an excellent resource for researchers, while the basic book serves as a convenient reference to students who only want to learn enough math to pass their final. Stewart attempts to combine both of these elements into one book. The result is unremarkable overall. It fails as a text suitable for research because the proofs are not explored in any great depth. It has shortcomings as a beginner calculus text because some steps of worked examples are omitted and begnning math students are left hanging. More advanced students (or professors) will likely understand what was performed, however they likely want a book with greater analysis than Stewart provides. Thus, Stewart is in a "limbo zone" between beginning and advanced students. The beginner will learn the basic concepts of calculus, albeit with some difficulty. More advanced students will be introduced to the important theorems, but will not be presented with many of the details about them.
Rating: Summary: A great text for students who want to learn. Review: While studying Mathematics at the University of Idaho I used this textbook for three semesters. When I took Calculus I appreciated this book for its great illustrations and it's numerous problems to work out at the end of each section. Now I am a calculus tutor and I see the real brilliance of this book is in its layout and progression. The manor in which it builds on itself allows the student to take manageable steps and see where what they are doing is coming from. If a student is wiling to invest in their learning this book is a great opportunity!
