Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: Good reference. Review: A friend recommended this book while I was looking for something to supplement the lecture. Unlike the previous reviewers, I don't find much difference between this book and Chiang's. They are both good reference books for basic D.E. and Linear Algebra. Yet they are both too shallow to be real supplements for the lectures. If you are an undergrad, or a little lacking in mathematical background, this would be a great book. Otherwise, it's a little pricey for a reference book.

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Let's clarify... Review: Because the comments in these reviews help you decide which book to buy, I just wanted to argue that it's not right to compare this book with Chiang's. Both are excellent, but they aim at different targets. Chiang's is less sofisticated, more practical, best suited for college or as a first introduction. And IT IS somewhat outdated. The notation is very basic. Simon and Blume's book is more advanced, aimed at students with more (basic) knowledge of math. Granted, it also covers basic material for the current standards of economics, but their notation and level are far superior. Read the review by "A reader from NY, US" below. Hope this helps.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Comparing Simon/Blume and Chiang Review: Both books cover much the same material. Although Chiang is more "basic" and Simon & Blume more "sophisticated" I would recommend Simon & Blume even to undergraduates and students taking their first course in math econ because it is better written and reads much more easily. Chiang, however, is more useful if you are trying to get to sleep. ;)
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Excellent but incomplete Review: Excellent description on mathematics needed in economic analysis especially in advanced level. But it do not include some topics such as dynamic optimization, integraion.
Rating: ![1 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-1-0.gif) Summary: Not for the Math Econ Novice Review: I purchased this book on the recommendation of one of my Ph.D. program professors who likes it better than de la Fuente's book. I agree that it's better than Fuente, but that's not saying much. Simon and Blume wrote the book for people who not only already know mathematical economics, but who also think fluently in mathematics. It's not for the beginning Ph.D. candidate in economics, but for the accomplished professor. If you already know the material, I suspect that Simon and Blume will allow you to quickly reference any of the topics it covers. If you're struggling to learn mathematical economics, however, don't try to use this book because it will reinforce any fears you might have about your ability to learn the subject in the first place.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: The "must" item for all Econ. students. Review: I recommend this book to all Econ. students. It helps me apply the theories I have learned, also, it enhances my ability on problem solving. Straight forward explainations and practical exercises.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: yes...its an investment! Review: I took the risk...it was worth it! I also read Alpha Chiangs book and still think Simons is better organized. You don't have to jump aroun between chapters. With Simons book you can go from ch. 1 right trough to the last one and really feel human capitalization at work. It doesnt have as much antiderivative analysis as Chiangs, nor does it have any linnear prog. Still, I think it still makes a better buy for beginners than Chiangs...the cover also looks better in ones study desk!!

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: The best math book for economists! Review: The book does not merely provide a sequence of theorems, but helps to develops mathematical intuition which is really critical for economists. I don't have any hesitation to strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn the essential mathematics for economics. One of the best economics books I've ever read!
