Summary: GUTS will withstand the test of time
Review: Guts is everything a book for business leaders should be. It's practical, thoroughly researched, engaging and best of all the principles put forth withstand the test of time. The examples and specific stories from today's most respected corporate leaders reinforce the practical concepts presented making the book a great read. But what will cause most leaders to "wear the jacket off" this book is the hard-hitting, no-nonsense Gut Check pages. I'll be recommending Guts to my clients for years to come.

Summary: GUTS! -- it ain't that great
Review: GUTS! is a sequel to the Freiberg's first book, "NUTS! Southwest Airline's Crazy recipe for Business and Personal Success" and unfortunately, GUTS! falls victim to the sequel syndrome that befalls many successful motion pictures - its not as good as the original.

As I read this book I kept thinking that the authors simply picked up literary litter from the editing room floor of their first book. GUTS! relies far too much on regurgitating the Southwest Airlines story told in NUTS!.

The title of this book (GUTS! Companies that Blow the Doors off Business as Usual) is a misnomer. Inside the book, you find chapters like, "Gutsy Leaders that Blow the Doors off Business," "Gutsy Leaders Make Business Heroic," and "Gutsy Leaders Lead with Love." Yet the title of the book is about companies and not leaders.

GUTS! is more a book about how by companies can achieve extraordinary results by creating a culture that is caring, employee-focused and fosters a spirit of ownership amongst employees. It is not about how leaders make gutsy decisions. Essentially, this is a case study book on companies whose leaders lead by practicing Servant Leadership principles and by infusing Servant Leadership principles into the culture of the company.

For those who need a primer on Servant Leadership...
Servant Leadership eschews the classical definition of a leader as being a stand-alone hero. Instead, Servant Leadership asks leaders to focus on creating a shared vision for all employees, encouraging entrepreneurialism and creativity throughout all levels of an organization, fostering a spirit of interdependence, embracing humility and promoting a sense of shared fate.

While I found much of the book to read like an extended magazine article, I did find the guts of the book to come from two very rich chapters that are chock-full of great company culture-related ideas. One chapter details how companies like Semco, Quad/Graphics, Southwest Airlines, Planet Honda are creating a sense of ownership amongst employees. The other chapter that I found worthwhile details how companies such as GSD&M, USAA, SAS and USAA attract talented employees. Those two chapters alone are worth the investment of money to buy the book and of time to read the book.

The authors researched this book exhaustively but they failed to adequately list their sources. Many of the quotes from the leaders they profiled came from published articles but those quotes were not thoroughly credited. (Failing to credit sources in a business book bothers me to no end.)

Summary: it's true, all true....
Review: Here's what I know: my dad's career as an airline mechanic came to a crash and burn period when Continental Airlines REALLY screwed over all their employees while doing a belly-up-er that turned out to be a lie. Enter Southwest Airlines, who gave an aging 30+ year career mechanic a job, recognizing the real mccoy when they saw it. Jump forward many more years, when my dad began developing Parkinsons to such a degree that certain types of work became impossible. What did Southwest do? Kindly shuffle him off to a retirement he wasn't ready for? or cut him loose in that more cutthroat way that many companies can? NO! They knew my dad wanted and needed to work, so they employed him ALL the years they possibly could doing work that was safe for him to do and made him feel a valuable contributer to the team. My dad felt respected, cared for. Southwest got a senior mechanic to whom the young pups could turn to with questions. When dad finally had to retire, he did so of his own accord, with Southwest behind him all the way. They even gave him their coveted "Mechanic of the Year" award before he left. Before my dad finally died he always said that Southwest was THE best company he had ever worked for, and they never failed to treat him compassionately, and as if they really cared for him as an employee and a human being and a friend. All I can say is "Wow"! And a big thanks to Southwest from me, a daughter who misses her dad, but is oh so greatful that he found such a great company to finish out his career with. This book, Southwest Airlines, and the other truly progressive companies represented in it are the wave of the future in a humanistic and productive society.

Summary: FROM NUTS! TO GUTS! - ANOTHER BUSINESS CLASSIC
Review: I didn't expect the Freibergs to actually surpass their first book, NUTS!-but they did! This book is another illuminating journey that shatters the status quo and kick-starts a re-evaluation of goals and what constitutes accomplishment. They present real life examples of leaders with the fire in their guts(!) to not merely succeed, but to re-create the whole definition of excellence. This is a book that should be required reading for anyone in a position of leadership-or aspires to be.

When it was first released, I gave NUTS! to my whole staff. It was an investment that, I know, paid dividends for years. They'll all have a late Christmas present from me once again, very soon---GUTS!

Summary: Ready for a Gutsy life?
Review: I simply loved this book!! GUTS! has the passion, the research, the real life stories, the challenges to grow and change, and most importantly the principles of gutsy leadership all in one excellent book. Drs. Kevin and Jackie Freiberg have given us all a tool for significant organizational and personal growth for 2004 and beyond.

Their passionate portrayal of unique leaders in a variety of fields employing gutsy behaviors like "lead with love", "make business heroic", and "inspire fun" is sure to cause transformation in you and your organization. The "can do" attitude of the leaders discussed in the The Monarch High School Project renewed my enthusiasm, inspired new hopes, and moved me to action.

Don't miss their use of GUT CHECK's. Organized throughout the book, these GUT CHECK's keep you focused, challenged, and applying the solid leadership principles to your next endeavor. I can't wait to share the ideas and the renewed vision reading GUTS! gave me with all the leaders around me.

Summary: Guts- A Must for Business Leaders and Those Aspiring to Lead
Review: Jackie and Kevin Freiberg have done it again. Their newest extraordinary book, GUTS, takes off from where their previous book, NUTS, ended. From a school for homeless teens to a Navy ship, from USAA to the SAS Institute, the Freibergs delight their reader with incredibly inspiring tales of gutsy leadership. The Freibergs describe "gutsy leaders" as "passionate men and women who don't hesitate to slaughter the sacred cows of convention." GUTS provides real life practical guidelines on how to get the best from each individual in an organization and have fun doing so. In addition, the book gives valuable insights into unique busines leaders who lead with their hearts, as well as with their heads, in making magnificent decisions and positive changes in the work place. GUTS is a book which convincingly proves that a gutsy leader can make a real difference in the world and make real profits doing so. GUTS is the book for anyone who believes that "the world is changed by people willing to take risks." GUTS inspires us all to follow in their gutsy footsteps.
