Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Very comprehensive overview
Review: This is the best overview of the economics behind firm strategy you can find. The coverage of the book is impressive. All economic principles are discussed in an accessible way, although you should have some understanding of basic microeconomics. Compared to a standard textbook in industrial organization the advantage of this text is a focus on real world issues and a vast amount of case studies. If you're in strategy and you like the views of Porter, Ghemawat and Nalebuff, this is the book for you.

Summary: Theory and Practice of Competitive Strategy
Review: This is the definitive review of strategic analysis concepts: their basis in economic theory and application in the real world of business.

Economics of Strategy is thee core textbook for strategy courses at the University of Chicago, but, ironically, it was written by members of the Northwestern University faculty. A great marriage of left and right brained strategic thinkers!

Well worth the time to understand and digest its many lessons on competitive strategy.

Summary: business and economics in one plus interesting case studies
Review: We used this book as bases for our strategic management course and it was really helpful. It explains all the essential things in economics without neglecting the view from the company. It introduces complicated ideas expressed in academic articles in such a way that every undergraduate student will be able to get the message. Even the maths are explained without making you confused. I especially liked the case studies which are worthwhile reading even if they don't belong to the topic discussed in class. The book is well structured and has summaries of the chapters as well as a comprehensive index. Even though it seems quite expensive, it probably is an investment into the future.

Summary: Fantastic!
Review: Well beyond the touchy-feely strategy approach, this book explores the details behind the economic reasoning of strategic decisions of the firm. Many examples, and theory that really forms the backbone of strategy. Excelent chapters on dinamics of pricing rivalry, isolating mechanisms of competitive advantage, vertical and horizontal integration, strategic positioning and more. Cover the basics and the advaced strategy knowledge in a well written manner. Very good MBA textbook.

Summary: Too techy
Review: Well, well, well beyond the touchy-feely strategy realm. It should be required text at U of Chicago and not Kellogg, but look who wrote it. If I had the capability to digest this book right now, I wouldn't be wasting my time getting an MBA. No doubt, however, that this book is loaded with information that I feel I will slowly be able to reference and comprehend.

Summary: Too techy
Review: Well, well, well beyond the touchy-feely strategy realm. It should be required text at U of Chicago and not Kellogg, but look who wrote it. If you are taking the basic strategy course at Kellogg, you can consider the book optional since the profs don't even use it during the course (unless it is one of the authors). If I had the capability to digest this book right now, I wouldn't be wasting my time getting an MBA. No doubt, however, that this book is loaded with information that I feel I will slowly be able to reference, comprehend, and use.
