Rating: Summary: It's a cute read Review: I found the book simplistic and obvious. It provided entertainment one afternoon at work when I had nothing else to do. Most good managers already apply most of the principals in the book. I think that bad managers will need a whole lot more then zapping (fry 'em I say). I did enjoy reading it though...it was a cute read.
Rating: Summary: ZAPP! in Health Care was wonderful! Review: I giggled and laughed all the way through this book. Yet, its point of empowerment and how to continue empowering those around you was very helpful. This book is not only about Nursing, but Ancillary services AND Administration. Breaking down the barriers between us will be the key to future effectiveness. We can all learn ZAPP! I'm passing this book around my hospital.
Rating: Summary: A practical application of leadership principles. Review: I have used the book for a review and as a follow up to basic leadership training. We spend 4 one hour sessions in small groups discussing how to apply the principles of Zapp and Sapp. I have never had someone complain about reading the book or the analysis. The audience has included factory supervisors, construction supervisors, and also upper management. The Heroz book is also excellent but is more applicable to productivity at the blue color level.
Rating: Summary: Ideas that I always remember on empowering others Review: I read this book the first time about 5 or so years ago. At the time the manager I worked for, I really admired. I liked my team. I liked my job. I felt good about where I worked and what I did! This book is a great deal of the reason why - my manager used it's principles to empower his team, and to encourage the team to empower each other. I have recently moved to a new office and have bought a copy for everyone. I would encourage you to buy it too....its very inexpensive for all the concepts contained within it.
Rating: Summary: Eye opener. Review: I think anyone in business should read this book, especially management. This book shows how to relate to people, what motivates people and how to maximize potential. Employers, managers and employees will enjoy this book. It is short, to the point and very effective.
Rating: Summary: Sappi! Review: If you have never read a business book or have only read of the 1 hour read variety (Who Moved My Cheese!, 30 minute manager, Leadership of Atilla the Hun) this book might serve you well. You can read it, get a quick summary in your head apply a couple thoughts and go to lunch. ZAPP!(like others before and many to come) is based on fictitious characters and situations - and they're pretty ridiculous. How can an adult pass by a character named "O. McDonald, E.I.E.I.O.!" without feeling patronized. The worst thing about the book is the lessons learned by the characters are so extremely obvious and are completely void of specific content. In fact, the 'route' the characters were going to go before 'learning' about Zapp is the foreign one that very few people, even extreme micro-managers, would ever travel. The dangers of this type of book are that it suggests there are only two types of management, dictatorial and empowering. To a hands-off manager (one who gives an assignment and just assumes it'll get done), they will feel they have "Zapped!" someone and they are a good manager. If you are truly interested in improving your empowering style, look elsewhere.
Rating: Summary: An excellent allegorical message for businesses. Review: In a world of supervisors and businesses hogging work and reputation, Zapp! gives new light to anyone who's searching for answers to employee/manager difficulties. A fast read, it packs a lot of meaning into a simple fairy tale. I liked it, and would suggest it for any business.
Rating: Summary: A must for plant management Review: It is very unusual to find a book which motivates the reader right from its very beginning - mainly when the subject has been so much studied and written about. The book leaves very clear messages in the form of "notepad pages", which are certainly worthwhile keeping as reminder on how people are supposed to be managed.
Rating: Summary: An Excellent Book For Anyone In The Healthcare Profession Review: JoAnn Mode was your classic nurse manager until she entered the 12th Dimension. This Dimension allowed her to see the true forces (and faces) behind the everyday operation of the hospital. I laughed until I cried. The book is not just a humerous story, it actually has very important lessons for all of us in healthcare. The secrets of empowerment are reveiled in this book. It is a must read for any nurse and especially the nurse manager. The different approach the author uses to teach the strategies needed to foster empowerment are presented in a way that the reader will never forget. An excellent example of shared governance is presented in this book. Buy two copies and give one to your boss! I will read it again, and I am sure you will too
Rating: Summary: Communicate Better! Review: Many people fail to focus on whether or not their message is received. More effective people focus on whether the message is received as they attempt to improve communications so their company can be more successful. ZAPP! also focuses on WHAT message is received. As the book shows, a perceived message can be dispiriting or empowering. I liked the fact that the book spent as much time on explaining about bad communications as it did on good ones. That is a great way to help people improve. The only thing I did not like about the book was that the end led into a sales pitch for consulting rather than tips for how to pursue this on your own. It seemed out of keeping in a book about empowerment. Skip the last 2 pages, and you will be left with a better taste in your mouth. Buy, read, think about, apply, and share this book and the lessons above with your colleagues. That will help you get heart-warming results to go with the heart-warming feeling that reading this book provides. Enjoy!
