Rating: Summary: A well-written course in biochemistry Review: This is a very colorful, well laid-out book. Stryer divides chapters concisely, so the reader can skip around without worrying about reading preceding material. There are some decent pictures and CGIs/Electron Micrograph images. Loads of fascinating material and information. Word of caution: the book weighs a ton (go to the gym the semester/year you take the course) and some of the reading is rather complex to the new biochemistry student (catered towards upper-division, graduate students). Good book but not a keeper, mainly because of the constant advancements in the field of biochemistry.
Rating: Summary: The Masterpiece in Biochemistry Review: To my mind,Stryer's book is the best one for discovering Biochemistry.Among very old books, this one is a very modern one, thoug it is 8 years old now.Sure,we are waiting for the new edition, but this one is a very modern, clear, concise but also precise one. Stryers talks a lot about 3D molecular representation, and that is,to my mind, the most pedagogical way to learn and to understand Biochemistry. I particularly appreciated chapters dealing with proteins and nucleic acids. Even chapters that are usually boring (for example carbohydrates)are interesting in this book. To conclude with, this book should be used by every student beginning in Biochemistry
