Summary: Invalid facts
Review: I have been receiving calls from people who got my number from this book, and I do not give out grants. The agency I work for does not give out grants for small businesses as described in the book. I wonder how much other information is inaccurate as well? The author obviously did not verify this number.

Summary: Free Money to Change Your Life
Review: I purchased this book due to the radio commercial that promised to provide a way to "get $15,000.00 to write a book". This was an absolute deception. The only organizations that subsidize books in Mr. Lesko's manual are those supporting technical journals or the National Endowment for the Arts, which offered me little hope of receiving any assistance.

It is outrageous that Mr. Lesko can perpetrate such a fraud on the public as this book.

Summary: From the receiving end...
Review: First off, a caveat: I have not actually read the book. I haven't even SEEN the book, save for the occasional commercial on TV. I HAVE, however, been on the receiving end of many, many phone calls and letters from people who somehow found my office number in Mr. Lesko's book in the hopes that I could help them get a grant for their small business.

Folks, I don't know about the rest of the information in Mr. Lesko's book, but because of my office's inclusion in it, I'm a little suspicious as to the validity of everything else in the book. Yes, I deal with grants -- I'm the grants director for a higher education institution. However, take note: I GET GRANTS ONLY FOR MY ORGANIZATION, NOT FOR ANYONE ELSE. In addition, there seems to be this misconception that there are tons of "grants" out there for just about anything you wish to do.

Most reviewers of this book have already mentioned the narrow criteria of most of the grants in Mr. Lesko's book, so I won't beat that dead horse here. However, for future readers, please note that if you see a name for a grants person at a college or university or nonprofit in that book, chances are they will NOT be able to help you. Our names were likely thrown in there just because we deal with grants. You will be chasing after the moon if you tried to contact one of us -- not because we're mean or selfish, but rather because we genuinely cannot help you as that is not at all our expertise or job. You will likely be disappointed if you tried to contact us for "free money."

The vast majority of grant money available out there is for nonprofits, individuals wishing to pursue graduate-level work (Ph.D.'s and Master's degrees), or more rarely, individuals seeking funding to start up a nonprofit or charity venture. Most businesses, large and small, started out primarily with a package of loans from a variety of sources, with the occasional "incentive grant" from local, state, or federal sources (but only for narrowly defined endeavors). Your money and time would probably be best utilized if you pursued these more certain avenues than spending inordinate amounts of time chasing after hapless grants directors and federal agency bureaucrats who most likely won't be able to help you anyway.

Summary: It's update but I was Looking for something else
Review: Like San Pablo too, I am also looking for the fund for my MCSE, and CCNA certificate program. THis book is not too helpful on this area. Does anyone has any idea where I can get the resources for such purpose of the funding for the career certificates and development purpose? Especially for people who is in shcool and looking for a job and try to get certificates. Thanks.

Summary: DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!
Review: This book has outdated numbers and is not as good as Lesko says it is in the commerial. If you want money for getting certificates like MCSE and CCNA (which is pretty common), then this is not the right source. I feel pretty stupid for buying this book. Its a complete waste of money.

Summary: Free money is not worth the price
Review: Handouts from the government, assuming you can get them, aren't worth the price. For some good reading, learn about the economics behind the terrible cost these programs impose on us. I recommend David Friedman's books, Hidden Order, The Machinery of Freedom, and Price Theory. It disgusts me that someone is trying to make money off of parasitic programs like this.

Summary: The marketing of this book seems to mislead
Review: If this book had a less sensational name than "Free Money to Change Your Life--" something like, "a guide to government grants to individuals" people would probably approach it with different expectations. Calling it "Free Money..." etc. is clearly going to attract people who want easy money. Getting grant money is not. That said, this reference is valuable in that it gets the word out about funding sources that are available. It is priced reasonably for a reference book of its size, but if you're really looking for "free money to change your life" and you are willing to put in some effort following up on the information and making proposals, a better bet would be to head to the library (or buy for $65) Foundation Grants to Individuals or a similar guide which is updated annually. This is aimed towards a more general audience, and as a place to start, it's worthwhile. I, personally, would suggest looking for it in a library, because even if there are grants that are ideal for your situation, most likely 90% of the information in the book will not apply to you specifically. Not a criticism, it is to be expected in a general reference on funding sources.

Summary: free money
Review: I have not even bought the book yet, but form doing RESEARCH I have found that the book does claim that the information inside will most likely be out of date. But you expect the heavens to part and millions of dollars to fall in your lap and dont want to have to think. If you DID some RESEARCH then you would know that there is an 800 # you can call for updated information. But would that be too hard or would the call cost too much for you?

Summary: What a crock
Review: Unless you are a pigmy with 1 eye that speaks russian-good luck finding a government program. Lesko fails to mention this little tidbit. Like most schemes, this guy doesnt tell you HOW to contact these people or what to say, I don't mind doing some work but comeon- dont just give me a blasted phone number and say "here you go" most of the numbers are outdated or the people didnt know what the heck you were calling them for, this happened phone number after phone number. Just another useless phone book, buyer beware.

Summary: Like a Hundai,..poor quality but yet,..useful!
Review: You can love or hate this guy and his book. Personally, i just hate the guy and semi LIKE the book. The information is out dated, thrown together and packaged just for you. Oh, and who can forget the 38+ dollars. But on the other hand the bits and peices of info that is still valid can prove to be a very useful resource for someone who has SPECIFIC goals in mind. That means if you choose to buy this jumble of info wrapped in a looney colorful cover, you should have a purpose. On the other hand if you are willing to seek out and find the info elsewhere then by all means ..DO IT!!
