As I read through the text, I was greeted by humor and a down-to-earth style I thought was well-needed in this field, which can be intimidating to many people. I learned a lot about helping get through my own financial situation and then passed the book along to my mother. While the tips on buying and home and so forth don't apply to me at this point in my life, I know I'll use this book as a recourse 5, 10, and 20 years down the road.

It really hit home - literally! I purchased my first home last year and this book helped me with my finances so much so that I went out and bought his "1999 Taxes for Dummies". What an incredible difference it made for my tax returns this year...deductions I would have never thought of. I'm thinking maybe I should buy stock in IDG books since I have so many of them and convince so many friends and family to buy them - but not before I read "Investments for Dummies" Thanks, Eric. I feel financially liberated.

Like Henry Ford, he wants to make something that was previously accessible to middle-income Americans. With Ford, it was automobiles; with Tyson, it is thoughtful financial planning. I am enthusiastic about his efforts and see this book as yet one more step down the path of turning his vision into practical reality." --James C. Collins, coauthor of the best-seller Built to Last"Smart advice for dummies...skip the tomes...and buy Personal Finance For Dummies, which rewards your candor with advice and comfort." --Temma Ehrenfeld, Newsweek "Worth getting. Scores of all-purpose money-management books reach bookstores every year, but only once every couple of years does a standout personal finance primer come along. Personal Finance For Dummies, by financial counselor and columnist Eric Tyson, provides detailed, action-oriented advice on everyday financial questions...Tyson's style is readable and unintimidating." --Kristin Davis, Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine
Rating: ![0 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-0-0.gif) Summary: A holistic and fun guide to managing your money Review: While I've written other books since, this will always be my favorite book as it covers the soup to nuts issues of personal financial management. It explains how to boost your savings rate, cut your taxes, plan for the future, select wise investments and make sound and cost-effective real estate and insurance decisions. My philosophy is that the concepts and issues one needs to master to manage one's finances well are not rocket science and that most people, once educated, can make good decisions. Even if you seek to hire an advisor, you must be educated - otherwise how will you be able to evaluate the capabilities of the advisor? I view my job as to be your advocate and mentor. From observing the mistakes which family, friends, and counseling clients have made over the years, I know what pitfalls await you. I chose to write this book for IDG Books as they are a publisher committed to quality and timely information. In fact, they are the only publisher which has their authors update books at each printing to include the freshest and most up-to-date information. The latest edition of this book has been completely updated including with changes about the new tax laws (capital gains, Roth IRA, etc.) If you do seek to hire a financial advisor, I clearly point out the pitfalls (which some planners of course don't like) and also provide comprehensive interview questions for discerning those with competence and ethics which unfortunately are in short supply in the planning field.

They certainly could have used this book. Tyson may not turn you into the next Warren Buffett, but he will give you the smarts to avoid the mistakes so many make financially.

Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Great Book Review: Personal Finance for Dummies is one of the better Personal Finance Books written post 1995. Although there is a wealth of information, there are also a lot of holes. Nevertheless, a great book for anyone interested in Personal Finance. I also strongly recommend "More Wealth without Risk" and "Financial Self Defense" by Charles Givens and "The Truth about Money" to help fill in some of the holes that Mr Tyson missed.
