Rating: Summary: Not thrilled Review: I was not as thrilled with this book as many people seem to be. I found the information in the book to be very generalized and vague. Additionally, what little specific information that is provided seems to be repeated over and over again in different chapters. I also found the layout of the book to be annoying with too many different graphics and fonts scattered all over the place! I think that this book is O.K. when used in conjunction with another, but I would not rely on this as my only source of information.
Rating: Summary: This is not a recipe book! Review: If you are looking for a poster of rules to duplicate and use, please look elsewhere. This book is about refining your own personal style, how to steal ideas from other teachers, and how to be the best possible teacher ever! No book can tell you what to do, and this one does not. It instead gives the reasons for you to teach well, and how to go about doing that. You must act on your own to create your materials and make your classroom function. I have found this book to be very inspiring, it does not talk down or denigrate the teaching profession. If you can't accept criticism, this isn't for you. If you feel that blue jeans and a t-shirt are always appropriate for teaching, look elsewhere. If you want to be a professional in a demanding profession, then try this one out. Read it with your collegues, check out the videotapes (your distric or COE probably has them. Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: A let down! Review: This book is, for the most part, aimed at public elementary school teachers. The first two units are simply common sense and I found nothing helpful there. I spent my entire time thinking to myself, "well, of course!" A whole chapter on appropriate dress was insulting and the layout of the book is distracting. All the tables make the book feel jumpy and kept my attention wandering around the pages. The books conveys what an effective teacher is and is not, but really provides no concrete advise as to how to be an effective teacher. If you need help with how to dress, how to assign seats, and how to take role, perhaps this book is for you. If you want real world advice about classroom management and cirriculum development, look elsewhere.
Rating: Summary: I got this book too late! Review: I wish I read this book when I was a new teacher. As a 14 year teacher in the "trenches", I learned a great deal from "First Day" that I could apply in my classroom immediately with excellent results. What a wonderful book. This one is a "Keeper". S.M. Stephen
Rating: Summary: Excellent teaching guide Review: I am in college working for a degree in Elementary Education. I found this book to be inspirational, encouraging, and informative. I would highly recommend it to anyone just starting in the teaching field, and to those who are experienced teachers looking for some fresh ideas.
Rating: Summary: Wow, what a disappointment! Review: All the 5 star ratings are really misleading. This book does alot of talking about "HOW THINGS SHOULD BE", but does not give much advice on how to do the things it talks about. This book is 300 pages of "no-brainer" stuff! Sorry all you five star people, but I was not impressed. The graphics and lay out of this book take up most of the space, and it is so busy it is distracting to read.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding Results with Dr. Wong's Effective Practices Review: I have seen tremendous results using the effective practices from Dr. Wong's book. As a principal, I make sure all the new teachers I work with have a copy of this book and view "The Effective Teacher" video series. Even experienced teachers have benefited from his expertise. His words and laughter have changed the practices of many teachers.
