Rating: Summary: Veteran Teacher's Review Review: I am a 20-year veteran of a public school system in Alabama. I love my job but I really felt that there were areas where I could improve. I had a student teacher last spring who told me about this book. Her student teaching supervisor was using it as their textbook for student teaching. I bought a copy and began reading. I read it cover to cover, stopping only to take notes and make plans! This is what I've been looking for! School starts in a few days and I am more ready than I have ever been. I have another student teacher coming in a few weeks and if she doesn't already know about this book, she will on that day!

Rating: Summary: The Best Thing Since Sliced Bread Review: I feel that I learned much in college, but nothing really prepared me for managing my own classroom. There were no college courses offered on this subject. Student teaching helped me get my feet wet, but I was in someone else's class and continuing her classroom management procedures that were already in place. THIS IS THE BEST RESOURCE I HAVE FOUND FOR HELPING ME ESTABLISH AND MAINTAIN A CLASSROOM THAT IS CONDUCIVE TO LEARNING. Harry Wong is the man!
Rating: Summary: Outstanding Resource for Secondary Educators Review: As a secondary science teacher, science coordinator, director of a professional development center for teachers, and college instructor for secondary science teacher interns, this book is for ALL teachers, including secondary teachers. For the past six years I have used this book with over 100 secondary science students/teacher interns, along with hundreds of teachers of science. They have all thanked me for introducing them to the FIRST DAYS OF SCHOOL, as well as showing them THE EFFECTIVE TEACHER video series which references this outstanding educational resource. Many have said, "I wish I had read this book before I started my teaching career." Classroom management applies to any teacher, and this inspirational and motivational resource provides both the beginning and seasoned teacher with numerous, practical ideas, strategies and techniques that will make teaching fun, satisfying and successful. Dr. Wong's ideas have changed many a teachers' outlook on education. They changed mine.
Rating: Summary: If you only buy one teacher book, MAKE IT THIS ONE! Review: When recommending teacher books, this is one of the only two I enthusiastically talk up. While some will think the suggestions simple, they are so down-to-earth and indescribably helpful to first through third year teachers-- or anyone else who wants to get control of their classroom from day one.By the way, the other book is "Tough Kid" by Ginger Rhode, et al. I taught BD junior high schoolers and it was like my bible!

Rating: Summary: For all K-12 teachers Review: This is a book for all K-12 teachers. It was written by Harry Wong, who taught high school, and Rosemary Wong, who taught elementary and junior high school. These two award-winning teachers make the research on student achievement understandable and share their learning of how to manage a classroom with procedures and routines and how to design lessons to achieve high-level academic success. They share practical, easy-to-implement ideas that bring instant results in the classroom, but stop short of pat answers. They believe in the dignity of teachers to develop their own personal style. The results have been gratifying. A veteran teacher in Illinois says, "After reading The First Days of School, I had the best year I've ever had. Wish I had this book 23 years ago." A new teacher said "I never would have made it through my first year without The First Days of School. It changed my life."
Rating: Summary: I Found The Book To Be Right On! Review: As a secondary teacher for 20 plus years, I found the book "The First Days of School" right on! Dr. Wong addresses ideas we should be using, only he organizes them. This causes us to think of ways to make our life in the classroom much more organized and less stressful. This book is filled with ideas on how to have a smooth running classroom.
Rating: Summary: Not excited Review: I thought that the book would be somewhat of a good source for new teachers, but it was repetitive. I was looking for more ideas. It used so many analogies and definitions. I just wanted some ideas on what to do on the first days of school, like I thought I was going to get. I did find some of it helpful.
Rating: Summary: Stop gushing... Review: I had some pretty high expectations for this book and after reading it I must say I'm fairly disappointed. Several criticisms, not one of which is that this book is targeted to elementary school teachers (i.e.,larger customer demographic). Also I couldn't get over the condescending nature of the writing. I feel like I'm 16 years old and Dad is giving me a lecture on how to handle the ol'Buick on my big date. This book DOES have some great ideas but the all of the hype as well as certain unnerving flaws ( of which I only mention two!) prevent me from thinking it the Bible so many others do.
